I'm working as a process manager also handling HR for one of the Visual Communication Media company at Kochi, Kerala. We have a team of Creative Artists / Visualisers who have to draw & design the Story boards. They dont follow the office timings and always comeup with an excuse that creativity will not come when there is any restriction on the timings & other HR rules.
Management is also forced to accept, as its affecting the work.
Any of you from Animation Company who are into HR, suggest me how its been handled at your offices and how the HR keeps a track.
Also the working hours fixation for the creative people.

Hi This is a lame cop out provided by over smart employees. There has to be structure of working hours and sense of discipline in organized corporate unit. Officially they are bound to adhere to office rules.
With regards to creativity, create a fun and relaxed environment at office. Punctuality does not restrict a creative mind. Donít get fooled by this over smart artists. Enforce punctuality. Also understand genuine cases and work out a acceptable middle path. Enquire or investigate why there is such attitude with regards to working hours. Donít buy any BS in name of performance.

one thing i would like to add is if u r stuck with such a team, then set targets (i mean in terms of money/awards / accolades recd for the organisation) . set stiff (not unreasonable) targets and then if these targets are met then u have a team who r doing their work.
there are genuine brains out there but that type is usually pretty obvious and u dont want to mess with them. (u just might loose them..identification is a good idea.
all the best and dont loose ur cool with them. they can be brought in line... it all depends upon how creative u can get.

This is plain humbug. Creativity is not directly proportional to the late coming. In that case you put them on afternoon shift. Make their working hours from 1300 to 2200 hours or something like that!
Frankly speaking it appears to me that they don't love their job. Scientist are most creative people. However, they spend hours together in the given task. That does not mean that they do not come early.
You start giving them targets of innovation also. Let them meet these targets. That is important1

Good views from lot of senior people!
I have worked with Graphic Designers and I have been an instructional designer myself. I agree to some extend that if there are flexi-timings for creative people then it is more productive. I also agree that a certain decorum is also important in a corporate setup. Depends upon how the balance is maintained by the supervisors.
If Creative Artists and Visualizers are meeting their targets and are able to balance their work by putting in 8-9 hours per day... then I don't see much issue here.
Jay, I would like to know are there any production issues? I shall only recommend anything if I see that work is getting suffered or there are any other repercussions. Commenting upon anyone's motivation levels without proper data is not good.

I think in the small scale agency HR people are facing this issue. Rather we call it issue it need to be tackled innovatively. Important is understanding, analyzing and addressing the situation and then come up with solution options that is plan A and plan B.
