“i only have a small frying pan.” - leadership lesson
Two men went fishing. one was an experienced fisherman the other wasnt. every time the experienced fisherman caught a big fish he put it in his ice chest to keep it fresh. whenever the inexperienced fisherman caught a big fish he threw it back. the experienced fisherman watched this go on all day and finally got tired of seeing the man waste good fish. why do you keep throwing back all the big fish you catch? he asked. the inexperienced fisherman replied i only have a small frying pan. sometimes like that fisherman we throw back the big plans big dreams big jobs big opportunities. a wise man would know that you could cut the fish into pieces to fit what he is capable of.

The brilliant fisherman,(story.)
The story. as king parveez and queen shireen were sitting in their palace one day a fisherman who was selling fresh fish was brought in front of them. king parveez decided to buy a fish and gave the fisherman 4000 dirham for it. the fisherman was overjoyed. he thanked king parveez and left. queen shireen turned to her husband in anger and scolded him for paying so much for a fish. king parveez let her have her say but said that the fish was purchased and that there was nothing that could be done about it. however the queen was adamant and insisted that the fisherman be brought back. "we will ask the fisherman about the gender of the fish" she said. "if he answers that it is female we will say that we wanted a male fish and if his response is that it is male we will say that we wanted a female fish either way we will be able to return the fish and have our money back." so the poor fisherman was called back and was asked the question. fortunately he was clever enough not to be caught out. he replied "the fish is neither male or female. it is neutral." king parveez was so impressed by the ingenuity of the man that he ordered a further 4000 dirham to be paid to him. the fisherman thanked the king again but as he was about to leave with the heavy bag of money one of the coins fell onto the floor. the fisherman immediately bent down to look for the coin. queen shireen was already upset that the fisherman had been given 8000 dirham. "look how miserly this man is" the queen exclaimed. "one coin has fallen out of his bag full of money and he searches for it instead of leaving it for some other poor servant to find." the man heard this remark and said "o queen it is not out of miserliness that i search for the coin but rather because it had the picture of generous king parveez on it. i would not tolerate anyone to cause dishonour to the king by treading on the coin." the king was so happy with this response that he immediately called for another 4000 dirham to be given to the fisherman. when queen shireen saw all this she thought it was better to hold her tongue and let the man go with the 12000 dirham before the king decided to increase the amount again. lessons from life speech is an art. if one knows what when and how to talk then such a person will be successful in life.
The fisherman story- change management
Friends when i train for change management i sometimes employ the following story to illustrate the fallacy of having change for change sake and differences in perception to change. i have found it to facilitate an enjoyable learning experience among the participants.... here s the story: a management consultant on holiday in a african fishing village watched a little fishing boat dock at the quayside. noting the quality of the fish the consultant asked the fisherman how long it had taken to catch them. "not very long." answered the fisherman. "then why didn t you stay out longer and catch more?" asked the consultant. the fisherman explained that his small catch was sufficient to meet his needs and those of his family. the consultant asked "but what do you do with the rest of your time?" "i sleep late fish a little play with my children have an afternoon s rest under a coconut tree. in the evenings i go into the community hall to see my friends have a few beers play the drums and sing a few songs i have a full and happy life." replied the fisherman. the consultant ventured "i have an mba from harvard and i can help you you should start by fishing longer every day. you can then sell the extra fish you catch. with the extra revenue you can buy a bigger boat. with the extra money the larger boat will bring you can buy a second one and a third one and so on until you have a large fleet. instead of selling your fish to a middleman you can negotiate directly with the processing plants and maybe even open your own plant. you can then leave this little village and move to a city here or maybe even in the united kingdom from where you can direct your huge enterprise." "how long would that take?" asked the fisherman. "oh ten maybe twenty years." replied the consultant. "and after that?" asked the fisherman. "after that? that s when it gets really interesting" answered the consultant laughing "when your business gets really big you can start selling shares in your company and make millions" "millions? really? and after that?" pressed the fisherman. "after that you ll be able to retire move out to a small village by the sea sleep in late every day spend time with your family go fishing take afternoon naps under a coconut tree and spend relaxing evenings havings drinks with friends..." " that s what im doing right now" said the fisherman and went his way. cheers rajeev.v

Iq, eq and sq
Here is soemthing food for thought for all of us. we all talk of iq and eq in interviews selection performance evaluation etc etc. but what about sq spiritual quotient? here is an excerpt from danah zohar s book spiritual intelligencethe ultimate intelligence. read and let us debate on whether this is to be considered necessary for organisations hr etc or shall we ignore this saying that it is too utopian? quote: danah zohar in her latest book 'spiritual intelligencethe ultimate intelligence' rightly points out that development of iq intelligece quotient or eq emotionalquotient is not enough sq spiritual quotient is very important for ultimate success and fulfillment in life. to illustrate she gives a beautiful example. an american businessman was standing on the jetty of a mexican coastal village when a small boat with just one fisherman docked. inside the boat were several large yellowfintuna. the american complimented the mexican on the quality of his fish and asked how long it had taken to catch them. the mexican replied 'only a little while.' the american then inquired why he didn t stay out longer and catch more fish. the mexican said he had enough to support his family s immediate needs. the american then asked ' but what do you do with the rest of your time?' the mexican said ' i sleep late fish a little play with my children take siesta with my wife maria stroll into the village each evening where i sip wine and play guitar with my amigos. i have a full and busy life senor.' the american scoffed ' i am a harvard mba and could help you. you should spend more time fishing and with the proceeds buy a bigger boat. with the proceeds from the bigger boat you could buy several boats. eventually you would have a fleet of fishing boats. instead of selling your catch to a middleman you would sell directly to the processor eventually opening your own cannery. you would control the product processing and distribution. you would need to leave this small coastal fishing village and move to mexico city then los angeles and eventually new york where you would run your expanding enterprise.' the mexican fisherman asked 'but senor how long would this take?' to which the american replied 'fifteen to twenty years.' 'but what then senor?' the american laughed and said that was the best part. 'when the time is right you would sell your company stock to the public and become very rich. you would make millions.' 'millions senor? then what?' the american said 'then you would retire. move to a small coastal fishing village where you would sleep late fish a little play with your kids take siesta with your wife stroll to the village in the evening where you could sip wine and play your guitar with your amigos.' unquote: commenting on this example danah zohar states further that: quote: "we can easily see that the american businessman in this story is spiritually dumb while the mexican fisherman is spiritually intelligent. why? the fisherman has an intelligent sense of his own deep life s purposes his own deepest motivations. he has evolved a lifestyle that meets his own and his family s needs he takes time for the things that matter to him he is at peace he is centered. the american businessman on the other hand is a child of his own spiritually damb culture. he is driven he has to achieve for the sake of achievement he is out of touch with those things in life that deeply motivate someone like the fisherman he has absorbed goals that make no sense just because he learned them at harvard. the fisherman will most likely live a long life and die at peace. the businessman is set for a coronary at fiftyfive and will die feeling he never achieved his goal." unquote: note the sentence "achieve for teh sake of achievement" don t many of us do this atleast once in a while? best regards bala
