The factors for motivation for an employee depends up on his position in the company as explained by the eminent mangement writer Maslow in his theory of Heirarchy of needs. he says, the satisfaction of basic needs like food, shelter and clothing may motivate the employees at the bottom of the company' work force. Satisfaction of social needs like education, medical and other social needs will be amotivating factor for employees at middle level.Fulfilling esteem needs like providing car, decent quarters or memebrship in professional clubs and promotions etc. will be a motivating factor for senior level employees and satisfaction of self actualisation needs such as recognition of employee's potential and acknowledgement of it in appropriate forum and assigning cahllenges corresponding to the employee's potential will be amotivating factor for top executives like CEOs etc.

However with the advent of technology and globalisation of markets, there are cahnges in these needs. For example, providing mobile is no longer a great motivator. Similarly,providing a car of a new brand and design will be more motivating than sticking to old brands and designs.

keeping this in view , you need to design compensation and frame your welfare plocies, rewards and incentive policies, performance appraisal methods and promotion policy etc.
