Hi Gunjan,
IR is related to Industrial Relations...meaning...trade unions, strikes, gheroes....political parties...if you search on any of the search engines you will find lot of material on it to read. generically speaking..IR is applicable to companies which have a manufacturing unit or a factory...like taking care of employee issues of factory workers, maintaining a good relationship with the trade union leader so that no strikes take place...do you remember the strike that took place in Gurgaon with the workers of Honda...that was a IR issue not a exactly a HR issue..then taking care of laws covered under PF Act, Gratuity act, factories act, companies act,etc...all this is a part of IR.
HR is more of human resource management...activities like - recruitments, HR planning, training, OD, performance management...IR is a part of HR....hope this helps...

This reply is late. Your need seemed urgent. The time was too short.

On one plane we look at IR comprising "conflict prone issues between employers and employees concerned with "issues of rights and issues of interests" and "legal rights and obligations". The normal method of resolving such issues through "collective bargaining". IR is dynamics of relations in the industrial context and are generally collective in nature. The relationship is ideal at transactional, institutional, representative and is supported by a simple "give & take".

HR is a philosophical orientation that the entire organization has. Ideally the orientation is that human beings employed are a RESOURCE and therefore efforts made to always get the best out of people by individual upgradations of the resource.

IR typically comprises, law, unions, conflicts even while working for the same objective of making the organization strong,

HR will concentrate on recruitment, selection, deployment, appraisals, rewards & punishments, training, teamwork, leadership, motivational programmes etc.

If you feel need for more elaboration, please free to take a contact.

HR and IR often cross each other's job nature. To make this little clear; If you need to achieve complete knowledge about IR, then you need to pass the HR stage. In IR, you need to know to how to send show cause notices, dispute settlements, and a few issues that are related to trade unions. In HR, you need to know about the recruitment process, training and development, performance appraisal, wages, competency mapping, etc...while these concepts are also well known by the IR professionals. For more information about IR, you can seek a help of an IR Executive or an IR Manager, whom you can find in a textile industry like Madura Coats or in a company like UCAL. Hope this helps all. Thanks.
