Thank you Tayal for attaching the project, which I could access. Here are some critical comments about the expectations of institutions rather than your project report.

It is amazing to see how poor the methodology section is. I could hardly find any justification of methodology used by supporting the decision with previous studies and/or expert opinion. The target population is also not clearly stated. How did you conduct the survey and where did the 100 come from? How many did you aproach and how many were willing to respond?

The recommendations are too general and does not consider the cost of implementing the suggestions.

The bibliography, especially those relating to material gathered from websites is very poor. The details of some of the books referred do not include the date of publication.

There is hardly any citation of references used in the text of the report.

Finallly, I wonder of what use was all the demographic data collected!! I think, you missed out an opportunity of conducting a good study by not using SERVQUAL instrument for your study.

Have a nice day.

I would suggest that you do not include the whole report but edit the data alaysis part to include only some responses and delete the rest, to stop others submitting your report to their colleges.

Simhan

PS: A kind request to other students. Please do not copy and submit this report as your own. I have seen this done in the past.

Dear Manju,
Thanks for your advice, i was also trying to collect data from primary source, but the barrier which is coming in front is the cost involved for the same, how can i get references in jet and air india for training permission, do u know someone who had done training from these companies.
Regards,
Meenu.

Dear Sir,
Thank you sir for your advice, sir i am into phd course, my research period is from 2000 to 2010 in air india and jet airways for comparing hr policies.
Sir its being 1year i am enrolled in phd, its not possible to change the topic, sir please guide me for sources of data collection.
8th December 2011 From India, Jaipur
Dear Meenu,
You need to approach the companies; I am afraid you will not find the companies' policies from secondary sources. I am sorry to disappoint you in stating that it may be better to cut losses at this stage rather than pursuing with the research to find that your thesis is not up to PhD standard. I am stating this as an external examiner of a PhD thesis from the University of Mysore.
Wish you all the best.

  • Your topic is specific to Air India and Jet Airways and again very specific about HRM Policies of these two companies, that too for PhD.
  • You have to be very serious about the study you are doing and also about authenticity of data and information you are collecting. Only way to ensure that is to directly approach management of these two companies.
  • There is a possibility that these companies may not part with the information you may need. But you should have thought about all these possibilities before deciding the topic of PhD

Dear Meenu
Please do not waste your time in asking here and there for collecting the secondary data for your research. Approach your college Admin Office and ask them to issue a letter stating that you are a research student and perusing your Ph.D. in _____ subject, hence you want to collect some data regarding HR in Air India / Jet Airways. You may be permitted to do your research in their office.
If your University refuses to issue any letter then be brave enough and directly approach the Highest Post person in that office and ask him/her to permit you to do your research work as part of your Ph.D.
Wish you all the best.

Dear S Bhaskar,
Thanks for the Advice, the purpose for asking here n there was just this much that i wanted 2 save my expenses, if i could get the project frm online source, much of my cost will be saved, like expenses of travelling to mumbai, staying there n taking leaves from my institute in which salary of almost 15 to 20 days would be deducted.
But really its useless to search in this way. May in month end will go self n collect info.
10th December 2011 From India, Jaipur
Dear Meenu
You need not to travel upto Mumbai. You can even check at Delhi or even at Jaipur itself with Airport Authority of India.
Please try from there and if not possible plan for travelling.
Wish you all the success.
11th December 2011 From India, Kumbakonam
From Airport Authority of India, you will get information about their policies and not that of Air India or Jet Airways. Approach right person at right place to get right information.

Dear Mr. Vkokamthankar
If you approach the AAI, surely they will guide you and give some tips about how to approach and whom to approach (Not names but only the Portfolio of the concerned authority) in that office.
As a matter of fact, our friend needs some clue to start collecting the primary information for her research. If we give some edge of the thread then she can catch hold of the thread and reach her destination.
That's the reason I told her to approach the AAI. They may even route her to AI and Jet Airways Office in Local area itself, instead of directly approaching at Mumbai or Delhi.

19th December 2011 From India, Kumbakonam
Thanks to all for the suggestions given above.
Sir I have visited Jet airways office located in airport premises of jaipur, but they have no such knowledge regarding training facilities for outsiders, they only had experienced there own Induction training programs related to job.One senior member guided me to approach Delhi office, he also gave me a mail id of some HR over there, but no response is available.
Now i have only one option left with me is to visit delhi office once and ask for permission to conduct research.
Because any how i need to complete thesis before 30th April and the primary data collection work till feb. end.
I have set my objective but not yet cleared my route map.........
19th December 2011 From India, Jaipur
Dear Meenu
Please enquire about the details of HR Head at Delhi from the Jet Airways Jaipur office. Get a letter issued from your College to that HR Head at Delhi Office. Approach with confidence and positive thinking, which will make your body language as well as your every movement will pass the message to others to help you. You can praise the Jet Airways for their services and hospitality comparing to the Government Airlines to get easy support from them.
Wish you all the best.

Dear Meenu,
I do not want to give you false hopes and, rather, prepare you for disappointments. I have had problems when doing my projects. Let this be a lesson for others; not to choose projects without doing groundwork about whether they can get access to primary data. It's highly unlikely that you will get permission even when you visit Delhi office.
Wish you all the best and I hope I will be proved wrong.
Have a nice day.

Dear Sir,
I don't understand why you have a negative impression for my topic, it was a relevant research topic that's why it got sanctioned for research right, so please don't critize the same.
Its just i was facing the problem of proper guidance in regard to collection of primary data collection sources, now i am clear that i will have move and collect the data.
You are saying that airlines will not disclose there policies, sir if this might be the case then no student had ever made assignment and projects on HR topics of any company. Being a student of MBA i had made Project report on GSK induction policy, for every student HR policies are disclosed by the department.
I need guidance from seniors, so please don't unnecessarily misguide me.
20th December 2011 From India, Jaipur
Dear Meenu,
I am not criticising you. I am only warning you about realities. Given the probem that Air India is going through, I am just saying be prepared for disappointments. I have not got any negative impression about your topic. The supervisor only says that the topic is suitable when you write the synopsis.
I have presented papers in international conferences. I conducted a questionnaire survey of 100+ universities; however, when I wanted to interview the respondents, no one had the time as universities were going through changes.
Wish you all the best.

Dear Meenu Dhall

I am writing this, on the request of a member friend who requested me to look into this and provide any help, if I can.

Sorry to say, but I had gone through this thread earlier; and felt disappointed enough to offer any comments.

Here we have a request from a person doing a Ph.D. seeking help for sources of information !!! I wonder if even this basic fact has not been factored in earlier before attempting the project; This is what makes people say - why for is the project being undertaken ? Just to get an ornamental title to put before one's name ?? Hope you do not feel offended at such remarks.

The topic selected is of such basic nature that I do not think even first semester students of Premier/Tier-I Business School would even think of attempting. Whats is the purpose of just COLLECTING FACTS about the HRM policies etc. of two airlines - one in a public sector and other in private sector ??? Unless the purpose is to test or validate some hypothesis or discover new facts or specific competencies ???

To conclude, i do not approve of usage of such languages like. "....and upgrade ur knowledge level." with seniors who have an accredited track record in their chosen specialization; and especially when the comment is not only unwarranted, but also irrelevant - for example, why and how would knowing about a particular university holding a seminar, which it calls 'international' (whether it was actually that or not - depending on the nos. and quality of international delegates; enhance or upgrade one's knowledge 'level' ??

Notwithstanding the above, I always welcome any new information or 'knowledge' which is relevant, correct and useful.

With reference to the instant subject matter, the research design itself SHOULD includes the type of data required, sources of data collection etc and these should be spelt out in the beginning of research design itself; rather than trying to 'retro-fit' them, based on the researcher's convenience or limitations.

Warm regards to all; i am especially thankful to boss2966 and vkokamthanker for their valuable inputs and doing their best to be helpful.
