Dear All, I am working in HR Dept with one company where we have 6 days week working culture and we have weekly off on Sunday. Recently I have proposed 5 days week culture so that all our employees will have weekly off on Saturdays and Sundays.
My management has asked for a detailed report on this proposal and they want to know disadvantages and benefits of working 5 days a week. I am in the process of preparing this report so all of you are requested to share your views and ideas on this point. If anyone of you already have any study report or survey with them then please share the same with me which will be of help to me.
Thank you

Let me know whether yours is manufacturing company of continous process it is so how you can plan Weekly offs on Saturday & sunday for all. Are the employees working in shifts, if so you have to plan for staggered weekly off and they will be getting Double weekly off on alternative basis.
If you switch over to 5 days week it will be difficult to come back for 6 day week. If you plan fopr your corporate / admn. office it is ok but better to avoid for the factory area.

Firstly employee feels an international culture environment in the organization and gets motivates towards the organization and works in an efficient manner than ever before . And employee always keeps in mind that - hey only 5 working days, hurrah and works best like ever.
Coming to disadvantage , I hope there would be less disadvantages, and more benefits, so go ahead to convince your management , and bring that culture in the organization. say more about benefits and less on disadvantages.
And I really appreciate your efforts for bringing this culture in your organization.

Santosh

Hi Amith,
Please let us know why you want to bring this change accross your organization. What motivated you to get this change. We should know your company details like what kind of industry etc., so that we can suggest accordingly.

Hellow AmSh,

Fine First I appreciate your move that you want to do something as an initiative.

As our friends Kamesh,Santhosh and Kishore have told the information about your organisation is essential obviously.

Apart from that tell me the location of the company from the actual town or village; how many employees/workers;

what is your consumption of electricity per day.

what is the fuel consumption on a normal day if you have company cars/vehicles etc.

What is your plan to match your loss of working hour to compensate on the other 5 days like increased duty hours etc. are needed.

Just you need to calculate the actual production on a day and the actual expenditure on heads. Analyse and then it will be easier for you to decide.

If much of public/consumers are involved in a days acitivity of your co. den better not to disturb the present pattern.

If less out put is your reason, then you need to enforce punctuality and tighten the working pattern to bring the optimum level of productivity.

Hope you got the point.

with best wishes

If 5 days working is implemented, it may affect the annual PL/EL pattern. Mostly MNCs, SW companies are following the 5 days working but I never heard of manufacturing companies. Pon

Hello all,
You can also implement in a month 2 Saturday off & 2 Saturday working culture. This will not make much effect on working hours of organisation or otherwise increase half an hour working hour daily, so you can balance working hours of organisation. We have implemented this work culture and it's really motivate our employee & we have reduce leave of employee. Go for it.

Well said mohan in resource prospective .
Kinjal ji your two Saturdays half idea also nice one .
any y amit ji before going to bring this change and five days week culture ...
think about :-
01. does your organisation needs uninterrupted service ?
02. does five days production or operations may effect your organisational needs and production requirements.
03. five days a week usually advisable for non - service kind of organisations not for manufacturing units.
any why think about organisational needs in resource prospective and production requirements.
take a wise deci..

There are several Advantages of 5 days working. One can divide them in to 2 types
Financial Benefits
Non Financial Benefits
Financial Benefits includes saving company cost on different things like if company is providing transport bearing whole cost then transportation cost, electricity cost, ability of the office man to work on a maximum capability as he is coming with a good mod to work
Non Financial Benefits are like employee motivation, employee can maintain a good balance in work and family so will work with a satisfied mind and concentrate on his work

Dear Amit,
Honestly speaking this is purely negative idea towards growth of the company & employee itself.
In today's scinerio any company either profit sharing/loss sharing, both can't afford any extra leave of any employee.
So, this is my opinion that if you gives this type of proposal to your management....so management has to re-think about your appointment in the organization.

Dear Friends,
Alternate Saturday off is good idea initially. It saves lots of overhead costs of operations and motivates existing & prospect employees to be associated with such organizations.

Dear Amit,
You need to make a business case as how your initiative would relfect savings in terms of costs to the company without disrupting work. You can suggest increase in work hours on week days to complete 48 hours a week. Look at those areas where you can propose savings like, transportation, food, electricity, coffee etc.
I suggest, this initiative be limited to only admin.
Best Wishes

you need to divide the weekly working hours on 5 and then reduce Friday working by 1 1/2 hour so that you can get Saturday and Sunday off 2 days
I am Sr. Manager HR in my company where we have 3100 staff like this :
1> HO : Saturday to Tuesday ---- 8:00 am to 5:30 pm with 1/2 hour break
Wednesday 8 am to 4 pm
Thursday & Friday off days
2> Branches & sites 2 days but have to choose one day with Friday so work does not suffer
all are happy

Mr. Pon nice suggestion yar….mostly MNCs, SW companies following 5 days’ work culture…bt never heard of manufacturing companies…..u mean to say MNCs can never be manufacturing companies….good one…
2nd December 2011 From India
You have to increase the daily working hours so that you can compensate the 6 day. Or you can make last Saturday of month working.
2nd December 2011 From India, Gurgaon
In fact, five days working culture is good for the employee as well as the employer.
Advantages
1.Power consumption on Air-conditioners, Computers, Lighting and Fans, is saved
2.Need not pay wages for the casual labourers for the extra weekly holiday.
2.Can save expenditure towards Refreshments and lunch
Disadvantages
Important work gets delayed by two holidays to wait till Monday.
People can always be asked to work on need-based and in case of exigency, on Saturdays and can be allowed to take a C-off on any day subsequent week.

2nd December 2011 From India, Madras
Please do the cost-benefit analysis before doing so. Don't think from employees perspective only let's think from employer point of view also. there has to be a mixed opinion on this to proceed further....
its very good for employees; may reduce leaves as well as they will get a long weekend which they can use for their personal work or outings etc.
for employer think in terms of the production/output on Saturdays, how it will affect the over all production. if their is less production then would you save company money by doing so.
if both parties will be benefited then it can be a good idea and m sure will be approved by management also.
if not all Saturday, what if you plan for second Saturday or alternate Saturday. for this also you need to do cost benefit analysis.

Dear All

Changing 6 days to 5 days working pattern becomes common nowadays. How we are managing 48 hours in 5 days whether you are proposing 9 hrs / day or 8 hrs / day. If so 3 hours / week how do the company manage. Whether the productivity affects on this or not need to check. Even if agree for forgoing 3 hours/ week, swapping to 6 days at the future times will be difficult which you have to judge. After recession in 2008 all the manufacturing companies offer employees holidays on saturdays for axing the overhead cost / welfare cost. You have to keep in mind that absenteeism during Fridays / Monday will be more than current condition if 5days working followed. In my opinion if the distance from employees house to working location is more than 40-50 Kms or duration of journey is more than 45 minutes then the 5 days working will be most suitable option for both employee & employer perspective. Having addition one hour working due to 9 hrs working pattern will definitely helps if you adjust your working start timing and end timing suiting less traffic conditions.

Hope you consider the above to decide.

best regards

Appreciate your efforts proposing for 5 day week. Even in manufacturing industries too, 5 day week can be implemented, for example for Admn. Staff, Design etc., that can be implemented by working more hours in the 5 days. Lot of advantages are there - can save resources like Power, Water, Transportation etc.,
2nd December 2011 From Belgium, Wilrijk
In addition to all the above I want to emphasize on the following facts.
1. Is there any Over Time consumption among workers. 2. Calculate the OMS and find out if any chance of improvement by this proposal. 3. Any new positive change for the workers acts as catalist for the worker for a few days but after some days that become usual and workers accommodate that change as their right and its reversal will not be easy. 4. Usually the remuneration and responsibility is job based for officers & management staff and that is time based for workers everywhere hence this will be disturbed.
2nd December 2011 From India, Mumbai
Dear Amit,
Adaptation of international or Corporate standard is good for five days in a week working, But before full implementation you should need to identify & check it out that such off Saturday doesn't mean for organization's business growth interruption. You should also compare the cost saving as with regard to working and not-working days i.e. holidays. If all conclusion is positive then there is no problem for Saturday off.
You can also consider over views of Kinjal, Kmitabh and Monali. This is also a better option.

I am afraid what I am going to say might not sound nice. While the discussion is certainly interesting, I wonder why people can't use proper English words. having to read SMS lingo on a forum is rather irritating. Especially since the abbreviations and idioms are extremely region centric. People, please use English on forums. What you write is going to stay here long after the SMS culture has moved on and most people won't know what you are talking about.

Pros for 5 day week is :
Low power consumption
Low cost on company on travel, if provided.
MNC culture
Employee's get the best opportunities to work in MNC in future
Stress relief
Improve their Health
Employees can enjoy with family and go for weekends
Company will get better clients like MNC
Employees can work for more hours
Productivity increases and absenteeism reduces
Cons of 5 day week is :
Salary payout issues on weekends
Work will delay if not closed by weekend
Employees gets pressured
Employees Health remains same
Gratuity calculation changes
Employee per day salary increases considering working days
Escalations may happen on any emergency at weekend
Finally, employees or HR may have to catch up their laptops if necessary on weekends.
