Hello all,
The question is "how to increase the workman performance in noisy environment?" This was asked by one of my friends who is working in a manufacturing unit as Operations manager. Generally, in noisy environment leads to depression, anxiety, high temper etc. How to deal with it?
Kind attention of HR professionals expected.
Thanks and regards..

Dear friend,

This; I am sure is not a question that can be answered by any HR personnel. It is a question for Safety Professionals – in fact it is an issue for Industrial Hygienist.

Loud noise (Noise in excess of 85 dB for 8 hours) will also cause some people to have anxiety and irritability, an increase in heart rate and blood pressure, or an increase in stomach acid. In addition, very loud noise can reduce efficiency in performing difficult tasks by causing fatigue and diverting attention from the job. Communication becomes difficult and instruction often mistaken causing accidents.

Noise is a serious health hazard. It causes hearing loss. Noise induced hearing loss is irreversible. Unfortunately, no treatment is available for noise-induced hearing loss once the damage has occurred.

People may differ in their sensitivity to noise. Nevertheless, as a general rule, noise is probably damaging to the hearing if the noise:
• makes it necessary to shout to be heard over the background noise,
• causes ear pain,
• makes the ears ring, or
• Causes a loss of hearing for several hours or more after exposure to the noise.

In order to increase the performance in noisy atmosphere:

1. Realize there is a noise problem.

The first step to take, before attempting necessary control measures, is to survey a plant in an effort to evaluate the noise hazard. An approximate idea of the noise intensity may be obtained by walking through the plant with another person having normal hearing and trying to carry on a conservation with this person. Where it is difficult or impossible to understand a loud voice at a distance of 1 foot, a noise hazard may be assumed to exist.

If you cannot communicate adequately at one foot, no measurement is really needed. You know you have a noise problem.

2. Initiate control measures.

What are some methods to control noise exposures?

• Substitute quieter process or equipment
• Eliminate or minimize noise at the source
• Isolate/enclose the process or operator
• Increase distance from the source of noise
• Change work practices
• Implement a hearing conservation program

Once employees are assured that the employer has initiated effective control measures performance improves.
In case you need more detailed recommendation please mention.

Dear Mr. Pillai,
Your participation on the above discussion is highly appreciated.
Generally noisy environment creates numerous health hazards.
But speaking on the HR point of view, the employees who are subjected to work in such environment show careless or rude attitude towards matters dealt by HR, like absenteeism, non-adherence to norms etc. The probable reason may be scarcity of skilled personnel.
My point is, how to deal with such situations.
Looking for some more light in this thread.
Thanks and regards.
