I am a lecturer in an engineering college. I use to do something different with the daily academic plans.......
In this way, one day when I was asking about the hobbies of students to guide them about some good hobbies, a student answered "smoking" and for a while I was shocked at his audacity and the situation
At that time what I should say him or do with him..
Please answer
Amit Kumar

Hai Amit,
The thing you experienced such a thing for first time.I can understand the shock. To handle such a situation you should should answer in a pinching manner for example"its good you have a friendship with good people" or its nice that you have a long life.
it is my way i dont want that you also should have such a way necessarily but such things should be handled in hard ways.

In my opinion, I think u should ask him whether he can carve out a career in 'SMOKING'? further more u can show them a PPT on bad effects of smoking. also tell him the difference between a hobby and a Bad habit. Smoking is a habit & not a hobby. at the end of the day the smoker is going to suffer. so chose a hobby over a bad habit, b'coz that would be useful, not the former.
with warm regards

Dear Amit Kumar,
Students test the teachers in many ways. Are you new to teaching?
Next time in the class ask the student whether smoking is a "hobby" or a "habbit". If he says the former, then kindly ask him to make a 5 mins presentation to the class explaining the difference between the two terms and what he has learnt from pursuing that hobby. For example of smoking being a hobby and what one has done see I recently took up cigar smoking as a hobby!? - Yahoo! Answers and Addicted to Cigars - Habit or Hobby found at Google
Have a nice day.

Dear Lecturer,
Astonished with the humurous reply? Yes, indeed and one would. He could have tried to make students laugh by giving a funny answer. Take it light and do the great job of teaching.

Hello Amit Kumar,
There are 2 ways you can respond.
First is what Simhan suggested--basically tie-up the guy so that he doesn't make loose comments any more.
Second is what Yogaraj mentioned--make the topic light & top it with another lighter comment that the 'assumed' stature he got among his peers [classmates] would be nullified [basically he was shooting @ his peers & NOT @ you--he only used the opportunity you gave him--that's human psychology @ that age] & he will still learn the lesson that Simhan mentioned, but in a different way.
I can think of one comment you could have made w.r.t. the Second Response option @ that time: That's great--let me also see how good that hobby can be. But since I am your teacher, I can't smoke with you--so pl call your father so that I can share my smoking moments with him :-).
