As a part of recruitment it necessary to have reference checks done . but at what stage ? with whom ? is it right to have refrences checked from past organization without the knowledge of the candidate? rc is done only after issuing offer letter . is this correct? if not then when should it be done. as a professional hr & recruiter i would request your comments on the same ?

Reference check outsourced?????
Hi just today i received a call from delhi from a company the executive told that she is doing reference check of a student who did a course non formal course from one of our authorised institute and wanted to check whether its genuine or not. she gave me details of certificate and marksheet and told that the student passed the course in 2002. also the course is just a computer course some hardware networking course... so i had to ask someone to get the dusty records from record room and verify it. she also told that she needed it by today as the candidate needs to join by monday if someone else would have picked up the phone he would have straight away replied that it will take 23 days and as saturday sunday is holiday she would have got the details from us by monday or tuesday as this is not official work and we are not obliged to do this immediately this would have been the attitude of any employee .. but as i am a management person i knew the importance of reference check both to the employee and employer and gave it within 10 mins now what i want to know is are today companies outsourcing reference checks is it really benefitial reference checks for jobs is ok but reference checks for education that too non formal education with so extent that even after having marksheets and certificates employers are doing reference cheks... how far are these checks successful as in some educational institutions if they delay the check what can be done as offer letter is issued before reference check...this is what she told me so she was requesting for data by today.... . need anyone working as only reference checker may be able to put some light on it.

Situation 1: you are the manager of a team of 3 including you and 2 executives one executive is hard working listens to you and follows your instructions punctual team player etc. his performance is in the range of 5565. second executive is stubborn doesn t listen to you and would never follow your instructions never punctual in no way team player etc . but his performance is always in the range of 8590. due to recession the management has decided to cut costs and that clearly means that your team will be reduced to two. who is the person you would choose to lay off? and why? regards arun

Hi i work for a background verification and talent management company called quetzal verify founded by 4 alumni from iim ahmedabad. while conducting the background verification process we came across a particular problem which i would like to share with you all. one of our regular background verification customers who we have a regular stream of business from asked us for something that we found hard to agree to usually we are asked to conduct reference checks for candidates only offers have been made. but in this particular case our client wanted us to conduct reference checks for a prospective employee before finally making her an offer. so in effect preemployment background verification has turned out to be a preoffer background verification. in such a scenario is it ethical to go ahead and contact a prospective employee s references? n our opinion certainly not but we would love to hear from what others ni the community think especially those who are into recruitment / background verification / reference checks themselves thanks in advance
