Hello,
A family company is interested in developing a real Talent Management strategy in order to prepare for a significant growth in number of employees (right now the company has 5 employees).
Part of that is to develop a set of core competencies that all employees should have. We've looked online, but have found nothing that provides a comprehensive list of competencies and advise on how to evaluate it. Some of the things we've found are competency libraries like "Leadership Architect" but we don't know which (if any) of the books they offer we should buy to develop the model.
I don't know if we are looking at this problem the wrong way, but any help would be very appreciated
Thanks,

Dear Carlos 5678,

Congratulations on your endeavour and decision to develop core competencies in your organisation's people.

Of course, I am assuming here that either it is your organisation, or alternatively, you are associated with it in a decision making capacity. And, I don't say this lightly. Your writing, grammar and spellings above are far higher than some of the better postings I've seen here. Thus, my assertion/assumption! Also, not many family businesses in India realise the undeniable value of competency mapping as a critical tool for the controlled and structured future expansion (growth) of their business. So, obviously, you are also very well educated and informed! Thus, it is a pleasure to reply to your post.

Please realise that the exercise you have embarked upon is very involved - both, in terms of duration, as well as effort. To complete a valuable competency mapping requires 100% buy-in from the highest levels of any organisation. And, it must also form part of the organisation's leadership vision and values. With this in mind, my suggestion to you is this:

Now that you've decided to map your people's competencies with a view to preparing a framework upon which to sustain future growth, I suggest you bring in someone who knows what they are doing. Remember, this is not to say that you cannot accomplish the goal in-house. However, doesn't it make better business sense that whilst you focus on doing what you do best (growing your core business), you hire someone whose core business is to do what you want done. That way, your business doesn't suffer, you focus on your core business development, and, you get the competencies mapped by a professional whose core business is competency mapping!

Look, I too am in a small business. And, the temptation to do everything myself 'to save cost' is tremendously overbearing. However, each time I reach crossroads similar to the one you find yourself at, I ask myself one question: 'Is this activity my core business and will it take me away from what I am best at?" And, if the answers are 'No' and 'Yes' respectively, then I look for someone whose core business that activity is. And, amazingly, whilst sometimes there is a larger than expected financial impost on me, the outcome of out-sourcing each time has been phenomenally better than I could have ever achieved doing it myself or 'in-house'.

So, if what I suggest above does sit well with you, please ring me on +91 8800 666 770. I can help you. I have spent many years in competency mapping to roll-out new initiatives within very tight budgetary constraints, yet, to sometimes unachievably high deliverable standards. I did this at large PSUs in Sydney, Australia. And, if all goes well, we can even canvass a commercial agreement for my organisation to complete your competency mapping exercise for you.

Essentially, I will partner with you in a critical need-area that you've identified, and ensure that you are well poised for the explosive growth that I'm sure you can't wait to make happen!

I look forward to hearing from you. My web site is Training Studio - Your Strategic Training Partner and my email address is
