Dear Friends,

I have done my post graduation (MSW) & PG Diploma in Personnel Management as well as doing my MBA final semester from Distance learning in HR & Marketing. I have 8 years work experience, in which 7 years I had work in the field of CSR -HR, with different organization in the field of Education, Oil & Gas, and Telecom. Currently I am working with one of Auto Mobile Component making firm in Gurgaon.

As I had always worked with HR department and having sound knowledge regarding the same, but in my current organization CSR is a part of safety department and there is no budget for CSR activities, as well as my reporting boss do not have proper understanding about CSR, due to that I am sitting ideally most of the day, and when ever I tried to incites some thing he always said we do not have any budget for that if you can do it Free cost than go head. I have done lot of activities and trainings free of cost through my personal links but now it is affecting my relationships.

Please suggest me what to do in such circumstances shall I apply for another job where I can get a mix kind of experience i.e. CSR – HR or continue with the same organization as I have joined this company in Nov, 10.

Regards,

Hello ganeshmaikhuri,

Your situation isn't very uncommon for those involved in CSR.

But frankly, I think with your 7 yrs exp, you should have cross-checked all such aspects.

There are many organisations which have CSR divisions/departments just to be used in their Advertisement campaigns or for Govt benefits.

Your boss reflects the very common Indian mentality--found more in politicians than among professionals.

Given the situation you are into, your only option seems to be to change ASAP to another job where you will find satisfaction & fair-play. I am not saying this from the 'present-tense' perspective. Once you complete 1 year, you will be due for Annual Appraisal--that's when the main problem is likely to begin. Your boss will most likely say: he didn't do anything worthwhile or some such thing that would mean the same & since it's the company policy [right or wrong is a different issue] of NOT having any budget for CSR, most likely no one would object to his ratings.

So get out of the situation--where you don't have any control--before it's too late in your career. And better learn from this experience--after all that's what 'experience' is all about: learning from mistakes.

Dear Ganeshmaikhuri
Have clearly explained about the CSR to your management?
Have you told that the amount spent on CSR will have the tax benefits?
Have you ever tried to extend some free of cost CSR Programme to the society?
First of all I would like to advise?? you to approach nearby school located in financially backward areas (Most probably a Government School) and deploy 2 or 3 staff to take spoken english classes or some computer classes to the students.
Then try to involve or invite your HR Head and explain the situation how our staff are having rapport in the community, which they got only with taking classes for spoken english. Ask your management to provide 3 or 4 computers (even used will do) for the benefits of those students.
After seeing these all surely your HR Head as well as Management will consider your request.
Always we must have the positive approach within us.
All the best

Hello ganeshmaikhuri,

S. Bhaskar is right--but when I suggested whatever I did, I assumed you tried everything from your end [if not what he suggested, at least similar actions] & then came to this Forum before giving-up.

If you haven't tried what S. Bhaskar mentioned, suggest first try it out & then move to the worst-case scenario, if needed.

While it's always nice to be positive, it's also wise to bear in mind the worst-case scenario & then prepare mentally for it. Something like this: hope & work for the Best & prepare for the Worst--since not everything we do will give us the results we hope. When one inculcates this mind-set, we are de-linking our responses from the external results & this will help us to get going without getting stuck in disappointing situations. Looking deeper, the reason for a lot of depression cases in the present-day executives could be this attitude--or rather the lack of it.

At least that's what I think the BhagavatGita means when it says: Focus on the action & not the result. I also found it working for me.
