Hi

What ever the motivational tools used there has to be a mix of both extrinsic and intrinsic motivation being derived by the employees. When this is provided rationally and in the right quantity the benefits of motivation will accrue to the organisation.

To begin with a well planned and effectively executed interview process would be the first step in motivation. When a new employee can join in with the ‘wow’ experience beginning with the successful interview he/she comes in with a positive frame of mind. A effective induction and thoughtfully prepared induction kit would help the employee get the feeling that he has joined a very professional set up. Having a mentor for the first few weeks would be the icing on the cake for the new employee to smoothly make the transition into the new job.

Depending on management policies, practices and creativity you can introduce some radical motivational tools too. E.g In India cricket being the unifying religion the dream for most Indians is getting to watch the India- Pakistan cricket match. Perhaps giving a half day off for employees to watch the match or organising the match on a large scale on the big screen with dinner etc. for the employees could be a more effective motivational tool in the long run than arranging a picnic or a party as an annual exercise.

As for the run of the mill motivational tools, I am sure you would get a lot of inputs by doing a search on this site.
