You may simply make 1 list of types of recruitments done which can be found in HR books by authors like garry Dessler or K.Aswathappa.
Try to make close ended questions so that the person contacted doesnot complain about too much time getting confused or reply like "i need time to think on it , i will reply later".

Absenteeism may be due to some unsaid reason tha someone is sick at home or tense relationship at home betwwn relatives or neighbours. You may try discussing some reasons in a friendly way - some employees take long time to actually state true reasons.
Lack of exitement to arrive at work place is commonest mental state for coming late. Boss-employee relations, problems such as parkingof scooter/car may also create late coming. Commonest reason given by employees is "trafficJam", if possible try calculating cost for transport vehicles for employees of the area from where the late comers are most - along with the reason stated above.
Work allocated may be too less - which makes employee either feel that they can complete in less time .
I am not listing Other common reason which you can find on internet or thru chatting with employees or your colleagues.
