What deduction can we make if an employee comes late by 15 minutes.
suppose that if an organisation is completely unorganised and its running the same way since last 70 years such that all the emloyees comes to the office as per their availability so how can we resolve it

if we will start deducting their salaries with immediate effect it will lead to high attrition rate

What best attendance and leave policy can we we formulate.

i would also like to know that in case a new joinee agrees to 10 hours of work a day believing that its a statutory working hours as per company policy but later on he/she comes to know that people are working at 8 or 9 hours working schedule per day. Is it possible for an employee to negotiate after joining.

Ina

Dear Ina,
First of all having a company policy of working for 10 Hrs is nor right.
Govt specified is 8 hrs with 1 hr break and that need to be followed.
If your employees are comping late you can rectify the situation. But as the organisation is old and this has been the practice for long time please be cautius.
First find out if your bosses are interested in getting this right if not no point in wasting time in doing so.
If yes, then have a circular sent that anybodt coming 15 mins late will be marked absent for half day and 30 mins late for full day.
Then keep a track and do it for a couple of months. Slowly and steadly people will start coming on time.
Hope this helps.

If a employee compensates his late coming by extra work then the salary should not be deducted.

allow grace period of 15 mins late entry 2-3 times in a month. Beyond that, treat it as 1/2 day CL for the late entries. Formulate a policy to this effect and circulate to all. Regards R.Ponraj

Coming Late in the office is something that happens across the globe. You just cannot have 100% on-time arrival on any day, leave alone a month. Employees will have an excuse or two ready at their disposal.
So keeping in view this universal truth, I've formulated the following policy:
1. Office timing : 9:30 to 6:00 pm
2. Employees are free to come late upto total 3 hrs in a month
3. Even a minute over 3 hrs will result in half day salary cut, irrespective of any amount of late-stay
4. Un-utilized time will be carried forward upto max. 9 hrs
5. Employees may avail a day off with pay on accumulating 9 hrs
It's been two years and everyone is happy. Not a single employee has lost his salary on account of late coming.
Give it a try

Dear
how many employees in your organisation
or all the people are working for 70 years by now, or do the older people knowing this and making a practice
do you have a union in your organisation, or and association
also see if the employee comes late adn goes late calculate hsi total working hours
or if he comes late and goes as per schedule timme and make it a policy then trouble
you also need to undertsand the employees mindset
as viraj said out a circular for working time and lunch time and disciplinary policy
before that get concurrance from your top management
make sure that you are trying to bring in the discipline only to your peoples
try to isolate the old from teh new, make new peoples under HR control, do not make turbulance
When you become confortable try to make disciplinary action on the oldees and try to remove them, by doing so make sure that the new juniors aware this and understand the need of disciplinary.
