Hi there! I've faced this kinda situation. The best & optimistic move in this scenario is to have a discussion with ur boss, assuming its not intentional. Ordinary people exercise regular, monotonous work, But Managers are hired to decide, handle & tackle pressures. Tackling crisis is an opportunity to prove ur skills. Its a crisis scenario & exhibit ur effectiveness.
  1. List out your regular roles & responsibilities.
  2. The frequency of reporting(ie, daily, weekly, fortnightly, monthly, etc)
  3. The time frame each would consume to have them ready
  4. Rank them based on your priorities.
  5. Likewise list out the same for ur current addnl workload.
Have the ball (This Scenario) in your Boss' court, get his priorities & views, plan ur schedule accordingly, on mutual consent & arrive at a win win situation. That's it. BALANCE. Put ur creativity & edge till a replacement is hired.
Finally, Enjoy being challenged. Put ur best & prove u r the best.

Smita,
Need not to worry about pressure but worry about your performance. You can explain the whole situation to your manager and ask your manager about the help which you require . For that you require a bit homework.
First list down the areas where you feel the trouble. Try to understand the areas or ask on this site, we will help.
Secondly ask about the core problems that you face in terms of understanding the process or he importance of the particular segment.
I know that all bosses are tough to handle but you also need to understand that when you'll ask for any help they will feel "important" and help you.
Also explain him the situation you are in by asking him work related queries.

Congrats!!! A normal person will not get such a great opportunity. From your shoes, I would feel glad to face such an event. FYI, when I joined my current employer, I too faced the same problem. As my team was able to understand my problem, I was able to clear the backlogs, earlier than I thought. But then, who you are on the inside will show you how soon you can solve the issues.
I would recommend you the following flow. Customise and then, use it.
Identify tasks-> Fix time boundaries -> Prioritize -> Plan -> Get the plan approved-> Act -> Document your victory ->Tell us what happened ->Update your resume.
The harder your problem is, the tougher you become. Keep rocking. I wish you the greatest time ahead. Dont mind disturbing us when you need any help or motivation or whatever. We just want Smita to be one of the best HR's through the globe.

Dear Smita,

In my openion your senior is not wrong because you need self assesment first. following points shall serve your problem

1. Additional work is labourious or intallacutal ?
2. If in kind of laborious, delegate maximum work to your subordinate i.e. desk person,receiptionist, peons and other concern persons, but excluding peon etc. to others you communicate the work, its compliance schedule and followup them, if they are not going to listen you communcate in writing to your senior about the scenario. Keep your concern work with you(as perious one) and give best result.

3. If additional work is intallactual then you decide your self whether you have through knowledge about the topics or not? If you do not have such adequate knowledge then do the study of the subject acquire the knowledge, prepare plan of action, show it to your senor - take his green signal on it and complete the given task in smart manner

4. In my openion you got the excellent opportunity to learn more things in early age period, only you have to make proper planning, scheduling, delegation of work. Please do not hesistate for timely communcation and rigorous follw-up.

5. Please note that if you alloted/delegate any assingment/work to any body that does not mean that allotee create any obligation on you becasue its official work and not help to you, concern has totally abide for proper compliance. e.g. any contractor/service provider's person is not doing timely job or not obey an order passed by you, being employee of pricipal employer, you have full authority to ask explanation to concern cotractor/ service provider directly and make cc to your senior. Please do not underestimate yourself.

6.While performing the day to day work, do not gossip or chat with your office colleague on your day to day issues. If you require any guidance then either you ask to your concern senior or any outside authority in the field who is geniune and very colse to you.
In privte sector survival is the fitest.

Dear Sir,
One should not be overloaded with work. It happens only in the case of bonded labour. It is better to avoid doing the work of others and be bold in your stand that you could do the task assigned to you only. Because already in private companies, employees are overloaded and they are forced to do more work than they are able to do. Your boss will take alternative action if the left out colleagues' works are kept pending for long time. Otherwise, he will make you do all the works until you are completely exhausted. Be bold. Please realize that employment is a contract for which service rendered by employee and salary by boss are mutually exchanged. Overloading of an employee is an violation of the agreement.
