Faculty Profile

Dr. Frank C. Schultz is a faculty member in the Economic Analysis and Policy, and Organizational Behavior and Industrial Relations Groups of the Haas School of Business at the University of California at Berkeley. Dr. Schultz’ teaching background is extensive and diverse. He has taught in the Executive Education, Executive MBA, Weekend MBA, Evening MBA, Full-Time MBA and undergraduate programmes in business schools including the Haas School of Business at the University of California at Berkeley, the Eli Broad Graduate School of Management at Michigan State University, the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan, and the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota, as well as the Advisory Board Company’s Physician Leadership Academy. His teaching has included courses in Strategic Management, Advanced Competitive Analysis, Strategic Leadership, Accounting, Finance, Marketing, Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Statistics, and Sales Force Management.

Dr. Schultz’ research interests focus on the strategic decision making of CEOs. His forthcoming book examines how Deliberate Practice can lead to the development of expert decision making abilities among CEOs and other senior executives. His research has received recognition by the Business Policy and Strategy Division of the Academy of Management and has been presented at numerous academic and industry conferences including the Academy of Management and Harvard Business School.

Prior to pursuing his Ph.D., Dr. Schultz worked for Fortune 500 companies such as IBM, Chevron and Pillsbury as well as two entrepreneurial ventures of his own. He has also consulted with numerous international companies including a Fortune 200 home builder, a global food manufacturer, a Swiss multinational manufacturer and numerous healthcare systems.

Workshop Description:

Deliberate Practice is an emerging concept that strives to illuminate the secret ingredients of outstanding performance -- across all areas of life. In this session, Dr. Schultz will present the most current research findings that explore the origins of exceptional levels of individual performance in sports, the arts, etc., and discuss the direct relation of these findings to the business world. He will introduce specific steps managers and executives can take to achieve the highest performance levels for themselves and their organizations by engaging in their own Deliberate Practice.
