Outsourcing the assignment is a good suggestion, rather than implementing an Employee Code system on your own, which has several inherent defects; has redundant fields; is inflexible and incapable of handling future demands and serves no worthwhile purpose except for the satisfaction of having such a system.
It is better to outsource the task; (in case the help of an experienced HR professional is not available); as "Employee Code" (esp. the logic and the algorithm) is a one-time job that has to be done well to take care of future requirements, ease of automation and the whole exercise must add value to the various employee related processes.

i can give emp. code as per their joining..
like first employee of the organisation will have 01...and so on...
its very easy to maintain....never confuse anybody.....
it also helps in finding out new employee and old employee.....
We are also following the same in our company....
in front use the short form of Company Name,
after it provide the numerical code like : 01,02,03 etc to the various departments and the Management level,
at the end place u can put the code as per joining of Employee.

Regarding your question it is necessary assing emp code for each and every employee it can be given based on their date of joining order ( start from 0001 )
Because whenever you want to search and prepare the mis this empcode will be very helpfull and if any employee name is similar more than one the empcode only will be identified

You can give the emp codes based on the dept, you may be having many dept's in ur company and according to dept's you can make the dept code i.e.
If you allotting the emp code along with the dept code, it is very easy make the reports dept wise like admin dept, support dept production dept, delivery dept etc...

by giving complicated code nos,employees will find difficult to recall thier codes.
you can start the first two nos by giving different digits to different depts. for ex. HR dept 10, Acc dept 11, Software dept 12.after that u can add two digits of their year of joining. then you can start giving nos 01,02,03 according to thier date of joining. last digits will continue as per the nos.
this will help employees to recognise the other employees' dept and the year of joining.

It's really Nothing to make employee code
I am completely agree with Raj Kumar Hansdah
Because you should make employee code at your ease
YOu can even make 10,000 employee's code without any doubles Which is just a minute work
I think u create Employee code for all employee, It help special HR people in salary time, You can find all details of employee by employee code. code start from first letter of employee example-- suresh kumar, code- S0001, Hope it will help u,,,,
