Greetings,

We live in a world where we make icons out of a winner and shun the looser. In an organizational environment, since every initiative is connected to a cost, it creates an additional pressure to succeed. In this search of success are we losing out on the excellence? Is there learning lost when we ignore failure?

Here we share an HBR article, where the reasons for dealing with a mistake differently are shared. This article is written by Vineet Nayar, CEO of HCL Technologies.
The Miracle of Making Mistakes - Vineet Nayar - Harvard Business Review

We understand what looks good on paper is often a difficult intervention. Have you ever tried implementing an environment such as this ? What were the resistance that you faced? How did it work for you in the short and the long term? I did come across a similar situation . But before that I wait to read your words.

Dear (Cite Contribution),

Very nice article. In our practical lives whether home or in organizations we are bound to make mistake. We learn and flourish new things. When we talk or say learn from the mistakes and don’t replete them. It means we are gaining practical exposure to deal with the particular thing and moving to new things.

Let me share instances from my organization.

One of our Fitter having rich experience used to fear when opening a machine under breakdown. On asking about the reason ,he always cited that he has a fear whether he would correct the same or not. He was having fear of the unknown and lost his confidence.

His HOD and myself counseled him and gave him free hand in such situations. After that he not only opened the machines but innovate new ways to increase the efficiency of the same. He might make one two or three mistakes initially but developed confidence forever. Such incidents happen regularly in the organizations. But for improvements and innovations we have to give free hand to employees to work and learn for further improvements.

We as HR professionals have to deal lots of people daily. We make our decisions based on situations. Some of our decisions prove to be wrong. Then we make right and innovative decisions in similar situations. It means our mistakes are the turning points to correct ourselves and be innovative.

“Learn from mistakes .It dose not mean that we always commit mistakes to learn. It means learning through experiences and don’t replete the same mistakes in future. Our life is very short, always try to learn from other’s mistakes also.”
