Creating designation, apart from being a creative exercise, can sometimes be the most challenging part of a HR role with huge impact on human motivation. I am currently in the process of relooking at the nomenclatures/designations of the employees in my engineering organisation. Though I am familiar with some common threads such as ( junior engineer- senior engineer- team lead/tech lead- manager- senior manager) etc..can we discuss to understand what are the things one needs to consider while coming up with a good Designation structure for an organisation. all inputs on this are welcome

Designation creation is very important and sensitive part. HR must me be on his toe while creating adesignation in organisation becasue it have wide impact on people and system. We should consider following points in mind while creating designation.
1). Keep it short and simple
2). Technically feasible - Most org are having HR system and system have there limitation such no. of alphabets.
3). Avoid duplication and ambiguity.
4). There must be internal and external equity in desigantions.
5). It Should meet people aspiration
Most of the organisation designation have comnination of level and Dept.
Ex. Executive from HR Dept.---- HR Exectuive
Manager from Operation ---- Operation Manager
Like this you can make desigantion plus point of this method is designation are simple and other can know about profile of job with designation.
