Dear Seniors,

I need help with making a career decision. I request your help in sorting a few loose ends here and there.

To brief you on my professional career till date:

I am an MBA (Mktg). I have spent 7 years in the education industry in diverse work areas and have worked both with Education Franchisers and Franchisees.

I have been involved in Centre Management, Marketing of courses, Coordination of courses, Corporate Sales - Trainings, Space selling and Sponsorship of the Events, Administration activities at the centre. Current Profile: Credit control & Management of A/c Receivables from Franchisees

Today, I am facing a very difficult situation where my current job is fraught with Salary arrears and I am not able to secure another job in the same function (Admin/ Education).

I need help in evaluating options-

1) waiting in the same job would mean an increase in the salary arrears and an uncertain payment in the future, is it worth taking the chance?

2) Will Skills enhancement by the way of PGDEA (Educational Administration) help?

3) whether equipping myself to become an HR generalist would be a good career move?

Any help in this regard will be highly appreciated.

A word or two from you in reply should go a long way in sorting things out.

Dear Amin,

Uncertain times takes us to a new direction and makes us succesfull in more than one way. You have spent 7 years in one vertical, you are an SME in it. Hence considering a degree to strenghten it is a good move . But then keep your expectations right.There may not be a sudden jump in your salary , and you may face another uncertain times, which will require you to either re-skill or upgrade.

But then it stands true for other verticals as well. Whether you do an SAP-HR course or move in the HR generalist vertical. Keep this in mind and plan your re-skilling . A ground-rule which we were told during our MBA is , keep aside atleast 10% of your monthly salary for upgradation every 2-3 years.

If you choose Generalist vertical, you may stand to loose nothing for a while . You will have a stable job and can continue till you decide to try out back in the educational vertical . This will not create a break in your experience , rather strenghten you in the long run. It should create buffer for you , till the skies are clearer .
