There really isn't much point in trying to have an American accent. The main thing is to be able to speak English well. The longer you speak English the more likely you will sound like an American, especially if you are living in the USA. If you imitate what you hear on the BBC you will end up with a British accent which is distinctive sounding to a North Americans. There are online schools that you can sign up to to practice your English though. That would be a fairly inexpensive way of getting practice. Places like talktocanada.com allow you to practice with an English-speaking teacher so you will improve more quickly. I would just do an online search and see what you can come up with. They would also do credit card processing so it would be easy to set that up.
One should be natural in communication. Bringing in false body language, accent, tone puts off people. Being artificial puts of people. Be natural and one will succeed. Instead of wasting time on building up American accent, utilize it for building up your facial expressions, the tone of you voice, posture and other non-verbal communication. That will really help you. Prof. Vivek Hattangadi /
Dear Asha
You have your own Identity, don't copy others,
Pls develop you English then you can copy their accent ( if Required) , I feel Indian Englsh is Better than American English ( american English is Gibrish & and very Colokial)
Remember nobody can turn you to be a american
All the Best
I have gone through all the comments. Its true. As a certified language and Voice and Accent trainer, I never teach a particular accent as it appears very fake on someone who has never been to the country he/she is trying to emulate.
PLEASE learn the language properly. The confidence that you will then develop will enable you to speak not only to the Americans but also to any native English speaker.
As suggested by some posts - watch Hollywood movies to understand and grasp the street language. Also watch the BBC to correct your pronunciation and intonation.

There is no standard American accent. People in different states have their own accent. The same is the case in UK too; we have Welsh accent, Scottish accent and even within England we have Lancashire accent, Yorkshire accent, Birmingham accent, Liverpool accent, and so on.
Have a nice day

Dear Simham ,
You are right , there are different styles.
Heres an experience , there was a practise in one of the organization I worked, where they had an ambassador program . And one part of the training was dedicated to English . Now the same set of employees who have visited Europe , if chosen for a stint in Australia would be given a Voice and Accent training. It was quintessential , for these employees as they would be deployed there for quite some time. So during one of these training , one such employee had given me a feedback, that the highest hours of training that they spent is 'In learning How to speak in English' as other skill training are always an updation :)
