Dear All

I joined recently (exactly 2.5 months back) as HR Exec in Pharma Company. At the time of interview they told me that I have to implement new policies within the organisation since I am the first person who joined as HR. And in HR only single person i.e., myself.

I have 2 years of exp in admin & 2 in HR. Over all 4 years of exp.

Now my management is asking me to move to Marketing(Bcoz a lady who was there in this position has left the job). Profile is co-ordinating with marketing executives, preparing their daily reports, making payment, receiving cheque etc (not at all related to HR). When I asked them its not related to HR work then they are telling it is just a extra responsibilities you have to handle.

And we have our manufacturing unit in Hosur and there GM-HR is there. So Management are telling him to operate our corporate office from there.

Now I am worried if I take that marketing work then what will I learn in HR? What about my career?

Should I resign here and search for job?

Anybody is having opening for me?

Kindly advise me on this & help me pls

Hi,
These kind of things happen in start up firms in any industry. HR is not recruitment and designing policies alone.
Making people to perform is also part of HR. Making your marketing team to perform will make you a strong HR. Develop a strong executive and later he can take over the marketing division and you can start focussing more on HR.
As of now, take care of HR and marketing. If u stick to same organisation 5 to 7 years down the line, you will be one of the decision maker in the organisation.

Coming to HR4nation post, See here now they are not at all assigning HR work to me, I have to handle only marketing, (Like data compeling, preparing reports etc).
As I mailed already GM HR from our manufacturing unit will be handling my activities.
So how can I handle HR & MKtg??????

Hi ,
I don't think there is any point to continue with your current organization. They are just concerned about their benefits , nothing else. As you have already mentioned that all the HR issues will be dealt by your corporate office then it is clear that do not want any HR person there .As you said that before your appointment there was no one in H.R , it means that earlier also they were managing without an H.R, so that won't be an issue with them.
You should think about your career ,suppose in case the company really wants to expand your profile , then do you have enough time to handle both the major responsibilities? Can you bear the pressure of H.R & Marketing both?
I think what your company is doing is abvsolutely unfair to a qualified H.R professional . You have a good experience of four years , lot many options are there. So think n decide.

Dear Anu,
I feel since you carry experience from both admn & Hr, they must have thought you would serve for both the areas, but if you want to continue your professtion only in HR then ask the question if Marketing head was there then what would have been your duty as Hr.

Dear Ms. Anu,
In that case, it is better you go and discuss with your higher ups these issues.
I guess, they don't to want to miss you and will offer the role you want.
If the management is very particular to continue in the same role, it is better to quit. (Before resigning your job, make sure you have an offer letter from other organisation)

Hi,
Take up the additional work, handle the critical work, like decision making and delegating, and handle core work of your new additional work of marketing, state the same to ur management, take this opportunity and learn how HR sales and how to handle line managers and their work style, take up the challenge and take up the work and after six months compile this experience of yours together along with your prior 4yrs experience and then try for HR manager post in some other company,in this new company you have lot of scope of experiment, just be diplomat
then again its your call, bcs i too am HR manager but I am also handling my companies AD/PR and corporate communication requirement,i enjoy all togther even thght i tires me alot, but then again I saw opportunity in diversity

In today's world every body is in Business.
Handle extra responsibility as you will learn.
And over a period of time they will have more HR work and you will be shifted full time to HR.
Many a times this happens that Much HR work is not there and therefore shift is necessary and HR shares other responsibility.
You will be dealing with most crucial resources in new role i.e. marketing people and its extension to learning about them.
Be positive.

Interesting case! It looks like you are a hard core HR person. In my opinion you should find another job relating to the field of your interest, which is HR. But don’t resign before you get another opportunity. Meanwhile learn to face the challenges the company is throwing your way. It is not bad to learn the ropes of another path as well. Who knows, in the long run it might benefit you.
So while you are on the look out for another job which will suit you, learn whatever possible about marketing.
Whatever the decision you take, Good luck!!
