How can we apply stress management to everyday workers? Stressed workers are less productive, more prone to accidents, have more sick days, and cost the company many thousands of dollars on the bottom line. What should be a good stress management program were employees feel good about coming to work and doing the best job they can.

Javier Hi,

Your query is on how to manage stress.

I have the following suggestions

Stress is often a function of a conflict of interest.

Like blood pressure (some of it) is essential.

Too low and too high is what you have to watch and prescribe for.

Identify & watch constant flashpoints, patterns & individuals.

Choose to get to the root cause and counsel people if needed.

In a corporte environment "clear talk" often helps many stressed out individuals see their own situation in a different perspective

Some techniques for stress reduction are common and some form of Pranayam ( a breathing technique) will help.

Shutting your eyes and focussing your attention at the end of your nose (not the tip) just feeling your breath go in and out for as little as 30 seconds has made as much as 15 to 30 % impact on anxiety levels in my training workshops and classrooms.

Light back gound music, ambience and of course the quality of the light in the room, the temprature and noise levels are all linked to stress levels. The rustling of leaves or the sound of cascading water are often equally effective as instant relaxants

At an individual level your attitude at the workplace is the prime denominator and determines the level of stress.

For detailed help on stress you could reply to this mail with your mail id or other contact details.

I don't know a lot about stress management in the workplace, but I agree that it can be very rewarding. I guess that we indirectly have certain aspects of our company that contribute to stress management. Unlike a lot of the up and coming industrial worksites in the area, we do not require the employees to wear a uniform. I believe this allows the employee to dress in what they feel comfortable (as long as it is within the company guidelines). We also allow workers to have music at the workstations or in the departments. I believe that music is a great stress reliever. We have been regularly subscribing to the e-Magazine at http://eaptools.com <link updated to site home> to inspire our employees and help the Bottom Line in our office. I think it’s a good resource for a HR manager.

Hi jAVIER,

I would like to contribute some points on stress mgt.One of the citehr members have given a fairly good idea about stress .

Stress is something which we experience in our day to day life-we feel anxious to the extent that there is butterflies in the stomach, palpitation increases,we are not able to concentrate on our work ,we will either show a fight/flight reaction to reduce stress.such kind of responses to combat stress over a period of time will be detrimental to the mental and physical health of the employees.the biological effect of stress is a concern. It may take the form of acidity, peptic ulcer and not to mention about the chances of having heart attacks and even diabetes-associated with the lifestyles of the people.

Basically internal and external factors contribute to stress.Personality types predisposes a person to stress and plays an important role in the ways in which the employees combat stress .type A Personalities are more prone to stress than Type B,they are at more risk.Stress for a long period will deplete the individual and ultimately leading to burn outs.

Coming to the external factors if one doesn't have the required skill to perform a job one will definitely feel inadequate and if they don't seek the help from someone,it will definitely be stressful.unreasonable performance demand is another crucial factor.Interpersonal problems with boss/ colleagues are all stressful.unable to meet the deadline is another source of stress at the work place.

nowadays more importance is gi given to the integration of work and family life.So the corporates should provide facilities like creche etc so that working mothers can lead a normal life .

If the corporates can do personality assessments with the help of psychologist ,assessment of type A people will help in keeping periodic check on the problems if any faced by them rather than having a snow

ball effect.Corporates can conduct yoga classes, relaxation session where relaxation techniques can be taught ,even regular exercise by providing a gym int eh workplace will help.Even at the individual level breathing exercises while at work can be done. One can control negative thoughts by chanting words like Om/Ma-something which gives u feeling of security, comfort and belongingness.Even employees can visualize a peaceful, calm and beautiful imagery for quite sometime. It will be useful.

Corporates can provide yoga classes, relaxation sessions, music therapy or provide opportunity to pursue some personal interests/hobbies so that they have a sound work force-mentally and physically
