Emotions and Profession of HR

Recently when I posted one discussion point on “Who should be considered as HR Professional?”, many people took this personal and gave their replies based on the feelings of their heart. People did mention about “Human Face” or “Human Feelings”, while sharing their logic as who should be in HR. Now, that makes me think and rethinks as how practical it is for HR Professionals to be Emotional and think from Heart.

We should have empathy and not sympathy.

We should be able to correlate with the feelings of our employees but should not cry with them.

Our work approach should be such that we should be able to touch the heart of each and every employee of our organization but should not get involved and let others touch our heart.

If HR Professionals want to make an impact and need to stand-up and get counted,

If HR Professionals want to be a part of “Boards of Director”

If HR wants to be listened and get counted for the Profitability of the company

Then, they need to keep their emotions in a Bank Locker.

Just out of contest, I am of the opinion that

1) There are all types of people in this world, Good and Bad; Intelligent and Dull; Successful and not-so-successful; Corrupt/Criminals and nice guys…it is up to you, what type of people you are looking for.

2) It takes COURAGE to speak the truth, more courage to listen the truth and much more courage to accept the truth.

3) Finding faults in others, criticizing others and putting blames on others are the easiest and most comfortable jobs in this world and we all are experts in that.

4) Down in the heart, everybody is emotional. We all want to be loved by others, accepted by others and cared by others. We all feel disappointed, when we fail; we cry, when we are in pain and we feel proud, when we achieve something. This is true for people from every religion, of any age group, from any country.

5) People have right to express their opinion…share their views and thoughts but they are no one to pass any judgment.

6) It takes guts to appreciate/congratulate others on their success and achievements. It takes a lot of strength to accept your own failure and weakness.

7) In a close room, we all are EXPERTS, it is only then when we move in an open market and meet other people that we realize that we have lot to learn from others.

8) Everybody fails or falls…at least once in their lifetime. It is easy to give-up at that stage. Only some have courage to stand again…out of that only few are able to walk again and those who are able to run again and bounce back with higher vigor and passion…they are EXTRAORDINARY in every aspect.

9) People believe in your present, they are not interested in your past and are least bothered about your future. It is for you to learn from your past…get inspired and motivated. For others, your present is everything…and they will like you…love you…hate you or ignore you…based on your PRESENT status.

10) To grow and to prosper in his life (Personal and Professional Growth), one need to move out off his comfort zone…do his personal SWOT analysis, accept challenges and take calculated risks.

11) No Single person in this world is strong enough to destroy the world or to create any type of vacuum by his absence. There were people like Martin Luther King, Mahatma Gandhi, and Mother Teresa…now they are not with us but we are still growing and prospering.

12) Everybody is a salesman and everything can we sold. It is for you to identify…what you want to sell and what is your target market. Goods, services, talent, knowledge, Skills…you name it…and you can buy it.

13) In this world there is a solution for every problem, provided you are willing to solve your problem.

14) There are misunderstandings because we don’t speak on time. There are misunderstandings because we hide things. There are problems because we presume things. There are problems because we don’t express ourselves properly and on time. Speak out, if you want to say something. Give feedback, if you are not happy with something but don’t sit quietly and escalate the issue.

15) Your GREATNESS is time bound, situation bound and circumstances bound. Under any circumstances, you cannot compare two different people one from 1940’s and other from 1990’s.

16) One must have enough EGO and Pride so that one can move out…with his head held high. One must have enough EGO, so that one can move with his hairs waving in the air and feet firm on the ground. If you lift your feet from the ground you will fall flat on your face.

17) Blaming others or external factors for your failure is a common trend but that also shows that we are not matured enough to take responsibilities for our success, progress, growth and achievements.

18) There are many people around us who carry negative thoughts and feelings. They are not confident about themselves. They don’t want to grow and they don’t let others to grow. If you initiate something…they will show their reservation; if you start something…they will oppose you; If you start growing in your chosen field…they will show doubts on your skills and future and then when you start growing in that particular domain…then they will come to you and whisper in your ears, “I knew that one day you will make it, you are a LUCKY chap.

Hi,

That was wonderful......!The blog of Mr.Himachali has given us some food 4 thought. As all of us are aware of the fact that we cannot think of human beings minus emotions !Emotions and the ability to express it makes us extraordinary. But one should definitely have a proper understanding of the appropriateness of the situations in which it is expressed, for which one should have the so called emotional intelligence.

You have written "everyone will fall or fail atleast once in your lifetime........ " I agree to u hundred and one percent.u should have the resilience,it makes us bounce back with greater vigour.what i believe is that we may not have control over the external factors but we should always scan the environment and control our emotions accordingly. Some may say that we are just human beings and we cannot control our emotions always.I do agree ...but if u succeed in doing so ..no doubt u'll standout from the clutter.

failures and mistakes are part and parcel of life ...but don't make it a habit or way of life.Move on and learn from the mistakes and definitely should have the courage to accept and take responsibiity for failures and mistakes....that'll definitely make u EXTRAORDINARY!

Thanx for the excellent post.

Hi Sanjeev

very rightly quoted

"There are many people around us who carry negative thoughts and feelings. "

I totally agree on this and have gone through this many a times as HR Manger , when i tried implementing new innovative employee motivation techniques in my company. People oppose you but you have to determined enough and have the courage to take make your ideas and thoughts turn into reality and have faith in your capabilities and once you achieve the goals , everyone stands by you as if they were supporting you from the day one.

Great ! and very truly said we as HR persons need to be very very professionals and keep our emotions at the back of our mind and not let them interfere with our organizational and professional objectives.

Good Work!!
