Hi all,

I havent had a chance to study in detail on musical benefits in workplace, but I will share what I know.

When listening to music you have to be careful, while music can be benefitual it can also be distruptive. Unfortunately, many people understand the distruptive form of music more than the benefits.

Music is see negatively in workplace, because, many of us are used to listening to pop, rock, alternative, where the noise level is high in order for us to appreciate these form of music and this becomes distruptive to the listeners and the surrounding people.

Music must be in alpha waves in order to stimulate the brains to a higher productive state. In this state, the brains are actually stimulated to perform and this will increase creativity, thought processors, calmness naturally it will help decrease stress, tempers and such. This alpha waves are commonly found in meditation, yoga and "spa" music and if I am not mistaken studies has shown that people meditating are found that their brain waves were in alpha state.

Also the ascoutic level must be minimal until its like its nearly non-existance. It like you have to really concentrate in order to hear the music. The music must blend into the background, but our consciousness will pickup its frequency and there's were it will be most effective. In this way, the music is not disruptive to the listeners and his/her surrounding and the effectiveness is still there.

I believe that music is very important, because I too enjoy music during work. But the right music must be used, Alpha state music. So far, I have found meditation music to be most effective to my own listening in the workplace. :) my boss still thinks that it is not productive to have music playing while working.

My little sharing, and if anyone has more information please share and if you have found my information to be faulty please correct.

cheers n smiles

Dear all,
I am a PhD Candidate and Music Consultant, and I am currently researching the effects of music listening in offices.
Music at work can be hugely beneficial for some, but very distracting for others. I would say that there are no easy answers to how music effects us. There are many complex factors to be aware of: social, individual, environmental and cultural.
Please visit my website www.musicatwork.net for more information, or contact me.

Dear all,
Totally agree with Anneli that music can be both beneficial & disruptive at the work place. It depends on the type of work u r doing as well as the type of music u r listening .jobs that require high concentration levels are better off with out any music while other routine jobs can do with some music.Efficiency in performance is however yet to be proved scientifically.soothing music helps say many but then again it depends on the concerned individuals. So, it is a case of many ifs & buts.....
