Valentines Day in India – Purpose and Objective

I know that this is not a forum to initiate such debates but still making an attempt to start this debate.

Do you think that Valentines Day is required?

Is it relevant to our Culture and mindset?

What we are gaining by celebrating such days (including Rose Days etc) and what we are loosing by not celebrating such days?

You can read my views at: <link outdated-removed>

(14th February is celebrated as Valentines Day in different parts of the world. This day is nothing less than a festival for youngsters’. The Valentines Day or “Day of Love”, they say is a day to express your love for that “Special” person of your life. That “Special” person of my life is far away but my love for her is not limited to few days or occasions. If Valentines Day is about expressing the love; then for us, every day is a Valentine Day.)

Like to know your views, ideas and thinking

Dear Sanjeev,
I donot know why we people are trying to downplay Valentine's Day. I know it is of least importance a totally Yankee Culture, but what is the problem if people want to celebrate it. I personally feel that we should not do moral policing and allow people to enjoy any day in whatever name they want to celebrate.
Anyway, in India we have given it a special signification, because 9 months after valentine's Day is our Children's Day.

Its true to very large extent. Its like making the childern to study for exam. Even though they keep comics and story books inside the subject-books.
And in India, we have hypocricy and double standards. The hot example the case of Shilpa Shetty. We can do any harm to others but when they do to us...we scream in pain.
Same is true for Valentines Day...let the people do...what they enjoy most...what they feel happy about.

hi,

A very good discussion topic. I do not consider Valentine's Day to be a part of the western culture. My argument: "What is this Western Culture? Are we suggesting that Australia, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Turkey, UK, and the US, for example, have the same culture?" To most, it is a day dedicated to expression of love; a day when they would want to show their beloved how much they care. Also, for many, Valentine's Day gives them an opportunity to meet old friends, let their hair down and enjoy.

However, various orthodox religious groups view it differently. They consider it sacrilegious, a blasphemy of the Indian value system. Members of a political party went on a rampage, looting Valentine's Day cards from a shop in Central Mumbai and ceremonially burning them in a bonfire. They even harassed handholding couples and threatened to beat and shave the heads of young lovers who exchanged Valentine's Day cards and gifts! But such opposition is sporadic and does not enjoy any mass support. These are the same political leaders who during Ganpati festival sit at night drink beer and play flash. Where are their values at that time?

In a secular democracy like ours where Freedom of Expression is a fundamental right, who gives religious or nationalist groups the liberty to use violence to stop spontaneous expressions of love and youthfulness?

I love Valentine's Day the most because it does not in any way harm the nature. Its just about expressing your love for people you love the most. There is no water pollution, noise pollution or air pollution as it happens in other festivals. Though a borrowed concept, this is one celebration that has managed to surpass the shallow boundaries of sex, caste and religion.

Thanks & Regards,

I agreed with most of the things that you have said. If Deepawali is related to Noise and Air Pollution; Holi is related to water and soil pollution. In some of the areas...there is a tradition to play gamble on the night of Deepawali. If you...compile all these...I do feel that Valentines Day is much better. It’s more about expression...exchanging few gifts...eating and enjoying.
If I say that Valentines Day is not in line with our culture and it is just, so called Western Influence…then is smoking, drinking, gambling, dowry deaths, murders, rapes, bribery…are these things in line with our culture??? Why not to change the basics? Its not a shock that be are among the most corrupt countries in the world.
Just a food for thought
