Hi , my office is centralized AC and I am a Asthama patient now how can get rid of this problem.please suggest me other alternate - can I discuss with the management about this. waiting for the reply.
5th October 2009 From India, Hyderabad
Firstly try to find a seat where the a/c blow is less or no blow.
Cover ur ears with cotton to prevent the cold air to pas thru & have warm water4 drinking.
Before discussing the issuw with the mgmt try & discuss de issue with ur immediate boss and seek his suggestion/help. Then u cud proceed further.

Dear, your problem is genuine.... but have you noticed that almost all offices have centralised ACs. So the best thing to do is to first ask your doctor what should you be doing? What care should you be taking etc, in case you HAVE TO be in that environment. Then you can always ask your boss for a 'less cold' place to sit.
Wish you good health.

Shikha

hi ambika,
your problem is quite genuine, and who else can understand its severity than someone who is a fellow sufferrer! i too am sufferring from the same problem and had to take 4 days leave from office because i had a completely congested chest!i have allergic asthma and the ac environment does not suit me at all. i have requested my boss to allot me a chamber where the ac is not very cold. that seems to be the only way out as most of the offices are centralized ac these days. apart from that,do try to carry a shawl or stole and keep your ears protected from direct contact with cold air. all the best and take care:icon1:

Dear all,
They is solution absolutely, if not 100% but you can reduce this problem to 50% by technical and 50% by you and magmt support ok.
1) If you find suitsble firson who knows abt the centralised ac, u can find d pl where it ac blows at low pressure, also there is possibiltiy of blocking single duct where you want reduce the cool & also temp settings can remonitered i mean calibrate for the right temp suitable for health.
2)If management supports, u can find the pl where ac is not covered.

Hi Ambika,
One of my ex-colleagues had this ussue. Suggestion given was : WEAR A SWEATER.
You see people feeling cold can wear extra clothes... but what about people who feel hot. They cant undress :-)
I hope you take this in the lighter sense. This was the suggestion given to the previous company colleague where I worked. He accepted it... slowly after a few days he started to feel better and understand why for one person everyone else should not feel uncomfortable.
6th October 2009 From India, Madras
Dear Sushila, Same as above - try usign a sweater. Well, when we had this issue, our company mentioned that the a/c should be set only at 23 or 24, nothing below that.
6th October 2009 From India, Madras
What Asha said can be welcomed....apart from that do try to cover your nose and ear using a mask...this can give you an immediate effect...
6th October 2009 From India, Bangalore
Hello; I am agree with Mr. raghu and Mr. mahesh reply. But not agree with Mr. mathew (Wearing sweater in the summer is not a sense) Make uniform rule is looking quite fruitful. Thanks Sushila
6th October 2009 From India, Jaipur
I dont know who Mr. Mathew is here.
Well - if it makes sense not to wear sweater, it also makes sense to have the a/c set at something comfortable for everyone. A few people will have to adjust by wearing thick clothes.. or sweater :icon1:

6th October 2009 From India, Madras
Dear Ambika,
I completely agree with the suggestion of Asha Mathew. I am also a asthma patient. I do wear sweater during rainy & winter season and I always cover my ears with cotton.
Its really good & helpful to implement the above.

Narendra

Same is the case with me dear. I am suffering from sinus and cant sit in AC, but cant do anything. Best thing would be to carry a light jacket and a stole to cover your ears....
It will surely help as it has helped me.
All the best!!!!

One more solution :
Paste/place the papers on hole of AC air/blow on the top of your seat(in case of centralised AC).
Chill air not contact you directly.
regards
Rahul
Note: Take office boy help for placing the papers.
6th October 2009 From Singapore
conclusion of whole discussion is" try to cover your self use jacket try to cover hole with plastic paper ok best of luck

right
if a employee has any problem in performing his duties he/she first discuss everything to boss
dear they are paying you and want best out of you if they feel due this u are not able to perform well then they will take it more seriouslly rather than any body else

Dear Ambika/Asha

I understand the Air conditioned environment is a posing a health problem to you. Having encountered a similar experience with my near ones, I would like to share my experience which may be useful to you.

The real cause for severity of asthma can not be A/C environment alone, there can be factors such as stress, dust and physical weekness etc., it differs from case to case.

You can also check it up with your physician on this.

In fact A/C environment ensures a dust free atmosphere which may be good to some asthmatic patients.

Meanwhile, the a/c has become common nowadays; you can not avoid it now. Instead try to find out methods to overcome it. You can talk to your management to ensure a comfortable working atmosphere. Because, in an ordinary tropical condition a room temperature between 22-25 will be ideal, where the moisture will be less and sweating will also be less.

You may be suffering due to a lower temperature set by your organization, because we, Indian have a general tendency that A/C should be less than 20 deg.

Besides, It is neither my intention to disagree with you nor I do possess any qualification of medical / biological science; I am just sharing an experience.

Hi Ambika,
Nobody has a right to force you to live in unhealthy conditions while working for the office.Frankly discuss with the management in requestive tone giving relevant solutions as per your office structure like having partitioned cabin etc. If problem is not resolved, do write again.

Hello Ash Methew .. u r right ...
I have two types of woollen clothes ... one is light warmer and the other is pure woollen .. ie Jacket .. apart from that I am having Muffler .. which I use when I feel more cold ..
If I sit in my chamber I use the light warmer one BUT when I enter System Room I use woollen Jacket with Muffler .. and it really helps ...
Now a days centralised AC concept has come where system rooms are having more cold pockets where u shud enter with ur own arrangments ,as system rooms temp. is fixed by the vendor .. say like DATA CENTRE part .. it has to be as low as possible , recommended by the verndor .More over online maintenance is also required when m/c is running for the same .
Whatever it may be , what Doctors suggest that joint pains , cough & cold are the normal phenomena due to AC.. It may call other complications in our future .. so what prevention is better than CURE .. 8-).

Check your AC condition if its dirty and clogged with dust, it has nothing to do with its being centralized. And yes wear proper clothes.
7th October 2009 From Philippines, Sampaloc
Asthma patient need not be worried about centralized ac as it removes dust and all pollen grains present in air. so it reduces chance of getting asthmatic attacks .you can request admin to clean filters periodically and all your machines and your lungs will be dust free. i am Dr. with 30 years working exp trust me your fear is cold air which might induced attack it is not so in a c in cold weather water molecules and pollen grains induces inflammatory reaction and not in ac .. so pl. remove fear..from your mind

Dear Ambika,
Try to get rid off Asthama First.
I prefer the problem will still long last until your day of retirement if you do not come out of disease.
Prefer Medication & Yoga. That will Keep you healthy.
centralise AC is Problem That I can understand But the Air conditioner are Provided to keep a comfortable environment in the Office .
You can request to have temperatures around 26C. But do not complaint your managment again & again or they my ask/force you to leave the Job on unhealthy Employee Basis.

Hi Ambika,
Most of the offices these days are equipped with centralized AC. your problem is genuine. But all you can do in this case wou;d be to have caht with your immediate boss and prbly chnage a place where the cold is much lesser. Also try putting some cotton on your ears while working and drink lots of warm water. This might also help.

As being said by members, A.C in centralized state is common in all office environments, and I face the same problem of being badly hit by persistent cold and cough because of A.C.
I feel wearing a sweater / jacket to prevent being hit directly by more cold blows is better.
I m in fact being deteriorated because of this a.c problem.
I really feel glad to note that lots of more real issues which are important are covered here.
thanks to dear members,
KB

Hiiiii I also have same problem ....Wat i do
Stick a hard cardboard with cellotape to the part from where the blow is directly coming to me . And put cottons in both the ears.
This will definitely help.Try it out
7th October 2009 From India, Ahmadabad
Your should talk to your management about this. The centralize AC plays an important role in spreading viruses so this can be your pick point & it also lead to reduction in performance due to unfavorable conditions which explain in ergonomics Just explain them this & you will rock in Org

The best possible solution to this problem is installing Ozone Systems in the centralized AC of your office. In places with employees having Asthma or other respiratory diseases problem , the use of ozone allows the environment to be healthy without causing any harm to occupants and also improves the indoor air quality.
You can Visit Environmental safety | health strategy |IS OZONE SAFE | OZONE and CONTAMINANTS | Smell in A.C. air | A.C. odour filters / Eliminate A.C. odour | Environmentally friendly disinfectant | Indoor Air Quality Solutions | Stale smoke smell | Air Ozone gene for more information or call me at 9371674006 for details.
All the best.
