Hi all :)

I hit this site by sheer luck and am actually finding it very useful. Before shooting my questions, I would like introduce myself to the other members of the forum.

I am an MBA in International Business and graduated last year in June. I chose International business as my majors in MBA and I was most interested in Organisational behaviour, Strategic HRM, cultural management and the like ie the HR part in IB rather than International finance and International Marketing. Having completed my industrial training and dissertation report in HR, I was lucky enuff to get an opportunity in a manufacturing concern where i am handling not only the HR, but also Personnel part.

Now I have been working here for almost half a year and i pretty much enjoy my work, yet i want to continue my studies so that i dont lose touch. My querries are as follows:

1) Should i go in for a full fledged distance educ course in HR from symbiosis or some other college of repute? or

2) Should i go in for a short term course in a particular field like Training and Development, etc ? or

3) Should i go in for a course like MA in psychology from a good institute?or

4) is there any other option you would like to give me?

I would be really thankful if any of you can help me with this and guide me as to how to go about it.

Thanx and Rgds

Swati

Hi Swati...
As you have already completed the MBA, What I would suggest is that you do LLB with specialisation in Labour Laws [as you are handling personal department also] which would not only help you right now, but once you are at the head of the department, it would become essential for the job to have Labour related legal knowledge.

Dear Swati,
Its nice to know that u did ur Masters in International Business, yet are interested in O.B., and even handling Personnel department.
As Ajmal said, if u do B.L., it will be useful for u in personnel matters. However, doing B.L., (part-time) is no more possible as the practice has been dispensed with (In Andhra Pradesh, it is so, and think it is same across the country). Hence, it will be useful to pursue any correspondence course i.e., P.G.Diploma in HRM or a P.G., in Psychology frm any reputed institutes. Since, u have already pursued MBA, it is enough to have a P.G., diploma than a regular MBA course with H.R. specialisation. Doing a degree in Psychology may help u become an independent consultant in future.
If u r looking into any specialised courses for Training and Development, plz inform me as I too am interested to enroll into such a course, as atpresent I am in Training activity.

Dear Mr Venkatesh,
I am a CA doing MBA with a keen interest in HR.
Your post referring to SHRM certification and the possibility of pursuing it in India excites me.
Kindly enlighten me on this.
Thank you.

Hi Shivjeet
I think that the qualifications you are gathering are good enough to get you a start in a HR department of an IT company....
I think that some laws are being modified / enacted for the IT firms post the Delhi BPO scam... keep track of that as it may play a vital role in your interview, whenever that happens... Plus keep in touch with the latest happings in IT sector in India... especially related to HR issues or any other issues that might affect the HR in the industry

Hi all,
Now i am a little reversed case ,in regard to people who have done their MBA n now thinking of psychology ..!!
Wel i am currently doing my masters in psychology with specialization in O.B ..n now the dilemna is whether or not to do an MBA ??
How critical is it? n moreover i was keen on doing from a reputed institute since it'll be two yr further investment of my life in doing a double PG.
Its a critical decision for me , whether or not t take up MBA .
Kindly guide and looking forward for some advice on the same.
Being an HR professional , would you be keen to hire a Psychology Graduate and a Postgradute (spl O.B) in your organization for a vacancy in HR in your organization?
A genuine reply to this , would help me assess my position and help me take a decision.
thanks

Hi Pragati...
I think that you have got good qualifications and it might not be essential for you to get additional MBA degree for landing up in job of HR...
Try in some of the well known corporates as well as some of good MNC call centres....
As for MBA... in case you feel like it... you can do an Executivce MBA alongwith the job to have a broader perspective

Hi Pragati,
Fully agree with Ajmal's views as you are studying Psy..which would prepare you well than MBA - HR as coming years would require specialists in certain areas like assessments , psycho-profiling etc.
All & said done HR is about three things.. People , people & people!
Am sure you wouldn't have a problem.

Rajat
