a client wants a job analysis carried out for all of the juniors manageriel position in her company.There are cureently 120 people in these positions and the client needs a comprehensive set of competencies to cover all of these positions .What methods of job analysis would you recommend and why?

Interview method is much better as this jobs positions are middle managment where job size changes frequently because small size organization of 120.
You have to first look at organization chart and location of all the positions then focus on business process model and conduct process mapping and finally activities analysis department wise to undershand the job volume and dimentions.
Different Questioner for different job positions can be used to list out the duties and task in logical orders to analyse skills, know-how, problem sloving and working enviornment to address major issues that value the jobs will be good. You can decide criteria after discusing with your client what is his philosophy of Job Analysis and Values of Jobs to evaluate as per his philosophy.

Since you mentioned that there are about or over 120 employees, I would recommend a two pronged approach.
  1. Send out an e-survey (maybe a quick webpage survey) to all the employees. Carefully pick the questions in the survey. If it is a multiple choice selection (strongly agree, agree, neutral, disagree, strongly disagree - I think you get the picture), or descriptive. Keep in mind, if your managers are like me or anyone I worked with, they would probably appreciate multiple-choice than descriptive (and also would be motivated to respond because it would be relatively less taxing on their already busy schedule). Once you have the survey results, it should give you a good picture of spread about the information you are seeking.
  2. Then, select a good sample subset of the employees. Ensure that these are managers come from various levels and functional domains. Interview 1:1 this subset to go deeper into the analysis.
