I am working in a manufacturing company. In the quality department, there are employees who are coming for complete 31 days and also staying for extra hours. We are not paying any overtime to these employees. Please let me know how they can be benefitted.

Dear Swati,
They can be benefited by paying double over time & if you are not to pay OT then it will be better to ask them what they want.

u can pay double rate of pay /hr or u can make it as incentives. if u r showing as OT then it should be accoring to statutory. if u want to avoid statutory things u may pay it as incentives.

Dear swathi
I do not know how much u r having experiance in HR because here u did not give how many hours they are working. One or Two hours is not much time to pay OT's it is genaral. The main thing is you are the Head of HR department?. if ur head disscus with ur management to implement OT sistem other wise leave that because most of the employers want to get more work form employees and they do ot want to pay any OT's if u tell this to your employees u will face the problem from ur employer.

Hey Swati,
You are hitting the pandora Box......I would like to work under you...:)...jokes apart.
I would term such QC employee a good, honest and dedicate workers and reward them appr during their appraisal. Overtime, should always be linked with productivity and if they are productive e.g their presence in QC helps the production department increase the production, please follow the OT rules of Labot Act.

Hi,
First of all please analyse why they are working throughout the month, if it is due to procastination or inefficiency then paying OT or comp off cannot be recommended. Moreover continious work will affect the health and work-life balance of the employees in the long run. Hence working throughout the month or stretching the office hours cannot be appreciated.
If they are working for the benefit of the company or to meet target during crisis time, then comp-off, special incentives can be provided.

Hi Swati - If these employees are "Workmen" by definition i sugest you go by the rule book on that one. If not then link it to productivity. You can link productivity for the employees who are "Workmen" also, but that will be in the larger picture of collective bargaining.
Attaching benefits to OT is a tricky matter. You must be clear that the OT is due to reasons of business and not due to reasons of inefficiency / 'additional income' mind set that some employees may have.

Dear Swati,

If the nature of work is of routine operation and not covering up of the backlog of work, then the employee is entitled for overtime. You can catogarise the employee into three, which will make the things very transparent and clear. Emplolyees from Workers to Supervisors as group I. Junior Officers to Officers as group II and rest of the cadre as group III.

You can catogarise that Group I employees are eligble for Overtime. You can fix that minimum number of hours should be 2 for eligble for overtime. You can pay either single or doble the overtime.

You can classify that Group II cadre employees will not be paid overtime but you can compensate for their extra hours of work by compensatory off. Yolu can make it a rule that minimum number of hours of work should be 2 and the total number of hours can be accumulated and agaist 8 hours of work they will be eligible for a days off.

Group III cadre will not be entitled for any benifits as they will be falling under the cadre of Senior Officers and above.

These are the broad guidelines, I wish to suggest to you.

Regards.
