There is no hard and fast rule for defining skilled, semi skilled or unskilled job. It has to be done by the employer in relation to the work and considering the degree of supervision being given to get the jobs done. A worker who can do the required job without any supervision shall be skilled worker, whereas, one who can work with less supervision shall be semi skilled and whereas, one who requires constant supervision shall be unskilled worker. Under Minimum Wages, some of the jobs have been given categories as to whether it belongs to skilled category or semi skilled. The jobs which are not categorised by the government machinery of fixing minimum wages only requires employer's categorisation. By doing so, the employer should be practical and should not fix wages of an unskilled labour to a skilled labour just to avoid higher payments. The minimum wages being a state subject, please go through the state government notifications in this regard. Regards, Madhu.T.K
