I am reciting an incident that occured to me recently and would like your thoughts on this.
I am looking for employment in Dubai and as per my experience and qualifications only "secretary/admin/PA/Office assistant " positions apparantly suit me.(Dubai standards)!!!
Here is a little of my background... I have 6 yrs of experience out of which 4.5 yrs of BPO (IT) Operations management (India) and 1.5 yrs of IT service management exp in GCC country (other than UAE) as a Secretary/coordinator. I was in a responsible position in India, but due to circumstances had to move to GCC 2 yrs back.
Recently, I had an interview in a construction firm for the position of a secretary for "xx" head. Now this co's HR has shortlisted my resume from naukrigulf and then called me for a personal interview. During the Personal interview, this HR exec and XX head (under whom I am suppose to work) seems to be very happy with my previous record and informally tells me that I should be joining them from the next day however they will confirm my joining date after speaking with their organization Head. The next day I get a call from the HR exec that their Organization Head would like to meet me for a personal interview....But unfortunately that interview becomes a pathetic experience for me in my life.... Personal and rude comments such as "Did u travel from Hyd to Bangalore all alone while the job change?? Didn't your parents object to that? Derogatory remarks about my BPO experience as though the people in BPO's just pass their time doing nothing....... Then comments such as getting a degree through distance mode Indian universities is like bribing someone to get a degree...etc...The job experience that I have seems very funny to him... Then questions about my father's job/position in India etc...." After an hour of humiliation, I was told by this gentleman that if all these things are fine with me, then I can join them.
My question to all of you is, what would have you done if someone(remember org. HEAD) have humiliated you this way?? Is this the normal procedure of humiliating people in Dubai when they look for a job as meagre as a secretary?? Above all , with my management concept, I dont think a company's head has to break his head on interviewing a base level employee.. atleast I haven't seen this happening in big MNC's in India. The senior management normally has nth number of tasks than just passing time .......What would you say???
P.S.: By the way, this secretarial position is not a very specific role such as HR admin/legal secretary. This is a general filing, documentation, travel arranging role which pretty much has no significance to my academic qualification.

Dear Aspirant,
This is the one which happened to u and there is only one thing the individual wanted to say u that he requires u and even not requires u. He tried to humiliate u so that u won't be turn up as he tried to hurt u psychologically. you should have made aware of him about ur job and ur role in every part and regarding the distance education u could have made him understand that the distance learning is the best than regular as u have already know it that u have vast knowledge than regulars. Dear Aspirant,
If the person's behavior was really bad, so my advice is search for any other opportunity. You have experience and knowledge, you will surely get another chance.
Always keep in mind, persons from a good organization are always of a good behaviour, so you can assess the standard of organization by the behavior of that senior employee of the company.

The behaviour of the head of the company says a lot about the organisational culture, my advise would be to let go this opportunity and look for another job, you mention that you have worked with BPO, why dont you look for job in similar industry there, If at all you have made up your mind to work at such insignificant position its better to work in the industry where you have some experience, let it mean starting afresh.

I am working with institute that belives that
Employer would humiliate employee and if employee want to stay its there wish.
People here belive that if somebody is there employee then they should not mind to these humiliations.
New comers are the worst victim of this belif or attitude.
So it is good that we should not go for such kind of companies.
I am working in this company for last 7 months and only HR person.
And have observed situation .
So please look for other job unless you want to learn or practice your skills on how to handle difficult people.

I personally thank all of you for taking out your valuable time to reply to me.. Yes, I have done the same thing as adviced by all of you here. I did not accept the offer and have sent a very strong mail in response to all the humiliation. Hope the employers here understand that they are not authorized to demotivate anyone who comes to look for a job in their organization as we aren't anyone's slave....

I'm really happy that you could share your thought about them openly and you did right choice, someone should open their eyes on what is going on and that it is not acceptable in working environment, since they are dealing with people not dolls, who listen and do no respond...
The attitude of the head shows that he is far from cultural values and ethics, which means that in a professional arena he will act like that with each employee...which I'm sure will effect their productivity!!!
I hope you will find the better place you deserve!!! and that's really good that you didn't involve yourself into this negativeness:) I think the work should bring only positive emotions and the one will always successful in his/her career path!!!
