Insted of just writing "please dnt tell me that search on google and citehr,i want live discussions..." why don't you write what you understand by the term competency mapping (which I gather you already know by searching previous posts) and then ask for either clarifications or how people have applied it, its benefits and so on?
As I mentioned in my posts before, I am good at asking questions and not answering questions that are too broad and not focussed. I just searched for posts on that and found quite a few threads with attachments, explanations, discussions, etc.

Have a nice day

hello sir...thnx for reply
sir frankly speaking i hav just searched on net because i have just started this project and i hav not visited to any HR manager in any company...
so back to topic....what i understood from compitancy mapping is that it is a process of finding out what are the actuall compitencies of an employee and presently where they are working and if they are working less then there compitencies then how to develop them is called as compitency mapping....
that is all i hav understood but actually this all is a theory so i want to know the practicallity of compitancy mapping....
i am waiting for more questions from your side.....
Thank You...
Shimit

Sir that is why i hav posted my query...
i am not getting a perfect direction on where to start and how to start...i need knowledge i need practicallity of compitancy mapping...on net we can search each and every thing but that will be all theoritical....but by searching on net u cannot succeed or we can say by searching on net a CHILD cannot learn how to start eating food by himself....that is what the case is...
sir please help me out with this...thak you
SHIMIT

Shimit,
You are not a child. I have to do the same thing as you, when I have to learn a new thing. But without a good grounding of the concepts you will not know why you are doing. A child may know how to eat by copying adults, but tell me how many know what is good to eat.
Why do you think a search of the web only gives you theory and not application. Please read posts and then make comments.

Dear Shimit,
To start with, one has to start his vision for end usage of competency, like Competency can be used in Recruitment, PMS, Training etc.
Regarding practical exposure, you must know competency of each position, role, job description etc. then only, you will able to map the competency.
One you start mapping process, you need to have proficiency scale for each competency, further you can identify GAP & prepare action plan to fill the gap.

Dear Shimit
The mere fact that you are pursuing a Master level degree shows that you are capable of reading, digesting and understanding. Had you searched the web using the key words from your query, you would have found a lot of answers. For example, there is a 104-page document at http://umn.edu <link updated to site home> This was found at http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en...G=Search&meta=
I hope you read that, digest it, reflect on it and then pose your further questions.
I am sure you will find more sites and read them too.
Have a nice day.

Dear Shimit,
I am no HR expert. I have taught Operations and Strategic Management related subjects and now concentrate on Reasearch Methodology and help how to get papers published, etc.
Please do not expect me to give answers; as I said before, I raise a lot of questions and give pointers. I am not underestimating you. Do not underestimate yourself and your capabilities. Like Hanumanji had to be reminded of his cabilities to fly, someone has to remind you that you can learn by yourself these days with the help of the web where most answers can be found.
Best wishes

HI shimit,

i read this entire discussion and ur dilemma on understanding what competency mapping is...
i did, rather am doin a project on Identification of Trng needs.. i m doing my mba hr too...
when i started out, i tried different methods to understand what to do.. i read up on a lot of sites, saw the questionnaires, bt none of it made any sense how to go about it practically, because it was all theory..

well what i did understand its a process, it should ideally begin with a job description, that states the KSAs, these are nothing but your competencies, so KSA = Competencies (this is my understanding, since HR uses a lot of jargons)

well its nt easy to decide on technical competencies if ur nt frm d bkground, either it will require a lot of wrk from ur side, or a lot of support n patience frm the managers, usually its the former, but i was lucky coz my managers in d cmpny r vry helpful...

anyway once you get the list of competencies per position per department in your orgn u set out to map it... what do u undrstnd by "mapping"? i see it as a school child whn we used to locate a city on the map of India.. that is mapping..
so nw u have to map the KSA of the employee, ie nthng bt rating him on a scale... u cn hv 2 ratings his proficiency and the other of the importance of the KSA to his job, when u multiply the 2 u get a number that indicates his competency level...

I used the gap betweent the standard and the current to identify whrere he requires trng.. therre are other uses of this method too.
all my reading on various sites help me undrstnd all this...
i think its right.. Seniors who read this post may possibly agree with it, or help me correct it....

Regards,
Divya Naidu

Dear Shimit,
Is that your first MBA project?
In none of your posts have you spelled the word 'Competency' correctly. I really wonder that being an HR student, you can't make the right searches and guide your way through the text-books. If you really want a healthy discussion on the topic (or any topic), you have to be crisp and clear in putting forward your query. Only then the seniors will be able to guide you!!
I suggest you to read the chapter and have (atleast) the basic knowledge of the concept. Books are the BEST source of knowledge.
Have a good day. And all the best for your project.

I do not think you are replying in appropriate manner. You are very rude and rigid. Calm down you are not fighting here. Help is never asked on gunpoint. Be humble and and then initiate again.

Shimit,
You are to begin a Project and you can't spell the 'Topic' correctly, and then you ask if that does really make a difference.
Had you done any research on Competency mapping, the least one would expect from you is to spell it right.
And one last thing, you are so rude and stubborn to all of those who are actually making an effort to reply to you and guide you in the right direction. You possess no courtesy. You must keep your attitude in place, else you will reach nowhere!!

Dear all,

Shimit has reflected on his approach and apologised. I have exchanged private messages with Shimit and for the sake of brevity, I have just reproduced my messages to Shimit.

The idea of posting it here is two fold: one, to enable others to benefit from the links that I have given Shimit; two, to request people to give as much information about themselves and their quesries after doing their home work. The idea of giving a link to a web page with my brief profile, is to request people to give details about where they are from, where they are studying/working, etc.

Have a nice day.

Simhan

Dear Shimit,

Your apologies accepted.

I am not angry or upset. Kindly see the 11 posts in the thread referred to above and see whether you have added much to improve the situation.

I have taught students for over 20 years and have been a student all my life. Even in retirement, I learn from my students (such as you). The best way to learn is not to be spon fed, but by reading, digesting and reflecting.

I have some guest and more in my next message. In the mean while see the book at and digest it.

E- book on Competency Mapping..!!!

As I said before read and digest the various links that I and others have suggested. For the benefit of others, I will post my private replies to you in the general string. Instead of posing questions within a short time, take your time to read. I am sure it will take hours to read the two books suggested.

Had you searched the web using google and the key words from your question, you would have found this very informative ppt presentation at http://www.slideshare.net/iapsych/macm-overview which was found at http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en...onship&spell=1

You can see my profile at http://promentorconsulting.page.tl/About-Us.htm

Can you please give more info about yourself?

This entire exercise should be a lesson on communication!! Did you know that capital letters in email language is to say you are shouting!
Ah, well....it seems to me that you are not comfortable speaking or writing in English hence the lack of comprehension from those who read your emails.
Let me understand.....do you want Competency Mapping examples from companies who have used this tool?
You want a step by step narration isn’t it.....?
Why they choose CM
How they utilized CM
The results of CM
Right?
Now go into CITEHRwebsite and you will find that over the years members have posted the necessary information. Read it and then if there is something extra that you require ask for it in a clear, concise well written email.
The Forum is established to assist in HR matters and the members are extremely helpful and well informed.
Now keep calm and do what needs to be done to get the information you need....

Hi Shimit
Good morning
I dont want to sound rude.
First of all you need to do a spell check in your note. It is extremely irrititating to see the word "Competency" spelt incorrect.
Second - there are hoards of write-up available on the search engine. look up, read, understand and get started with some ground work. One cannot be spoon fed. Moreover, you have not stated the structure of your organization, what your management intends to derive out of this mapping, etc.
Competency mapping runs / derived out of business goals.
Make a questionnaire and get into discussions with your HOD to arrive at what you want to finally submit.
Good luck

Dear Shimit,

I'm happy you have taken up this topic as your project dissertation. good !!!

But after seeing this entire particular thread right from starting, i'm surprised that to see that you are not focussed as to why you have taken this topic in the first place without understanding the meaning and theory part of the same. What is your objective in takin this topic, have you thought of that??????

Secondly, doing a career in MBA, you should not be making any spelling mistakes in your entire career. the spelling mistake of the word "Competency" which you made, reflects alot in your project, the company you do the project as well as the judges in your viva-voce !!!

thirdly, whenever you want to have any knowledge / learning, first search it yourself and if any clarification, put down your points and put it for discussion with the general in Citehr.com or any other link of your choice which you feel your queries can be clarified. but make sure you have actually understood the topic, and understood the query you have put up too !!!

lastly, coming to your topic. take a small note pad (make this a practice). write down meaning of :

1. Competency

2. Competency Mapping

3. Competent

4. Difference between Competency and Competent

5. link btw Competency and Performance

6. KSA

7. The Different Levels of Competencies

8. Types of competency

9. Competency Matrix

10. rating scales

11.Assessment

12. Gap Analysis

13. Who coined the term Competency : Mc Clelland ( understand why did he do it)

There are many more simple terms related to this topic, now its you who should study and take up this initiative to learn, grasp and understand by yourself !!!!!

All the Best for your project.

Dear Shimit..
First of all understand all the terminologies of HR by READING BOOKS and also use google/cite hr for more clarifications.
For practical exposure u have to meet HR persons(managers/executive etc) in person coz what u r doing is a project which has to be worthy enough when u submit in your college and will help you in future placements.
Get appointment from HR person,go meet them or atleast try to talk to them in phone so you will get some info on your topic.
Kindly correct the spelling of your Compitancy mapping. Its COMPETENCY MAPPING.Think u should be keen enough in knowing each and every word and meaning of HR.Improve your interests level which should help you in many ways.

HI Shamit,
I think u have got most of the details regarding competency mapping. here I would like 2 give u some inputs.

Since u have mentioned u'r project is on IR & most of my activities are in relation to these aspects I hope these points may be useful for u.

Specially in Industries generally there are 2 categories i.e. Managerial staff & other one is workmen or u can call Bargainable employees. Requirement of both varies.

For Managerial staff in order to map u should have the job profile for each positions. For Eg: If u are selecting Purchasing dept, define job profiles for Sr purchasing officer, call off engineer, vendor developer etc. You should have criterias of rating levels i.e. from 0 to 3 or 4 or 5 any of u'r convenient. 0 should be least & highest will be the top ranking...
Also, another important factor is, generally competency mapping is done considering 3 areas i.e. Based on Personality, Knowledge & skills.

All these 3 areas u should c in the mapping. But whereas if u c workmen mapping it's little bit difficult to do in all these areas b'coz in most of the companies workmen will be selected based on their skills & experience rather than education. For Eg, for a fitter/Grinder job employee working will be either just SSC, ITI or even lower. Hence specially in such cases skill mapping is done & gaps are identified.

I hope this small input may be helpful 2 u...

Hi Shimit,
I'm an MBA..I did project in competency mapping for my project..I strongly request u to read the book "The Handbook of Competency Mapping by Seema Sanghi". This book gives you all that u need to understand for a project work..actually this is a vast area which has a high demand these days. so its good if u get a proper understanding from the beginning. u cannot understand wats in practice without knowing the theory.so make up ur mind to understand the theory part first.then it'll be easy for u to apply it confidently in any company.
