Dear Archana,

I have not used this tool in my career. However, this tool can be used in counselling, interviews, "presentation skills" training program, etc.

For example, in Johari Window, there is "unknown self", this means some information is known to others which you do not know.

Certain mannerisms, styles and rhythm of an individual while interacting with his colleagues, peers and subordinates may not be conducive. The individual may not be aware of this. You can point out the same and correct himself (he becomes concsious only when he is told about it).

Similarly, the "Open self" is known to both the individual and the perceiver. This trait can help his boss to identify his strenghts and weaknesses.

Other two ("Known self" - which the individual only know, "dark self" individual and perceiver both have no idea) will not have much to offer. Unless the individual volunteers himself to disclose some facts or secrets about himself, helping him will not be possible. We can encounter this type of trait, during interview.

Dear All,
Johari window is a tool for all managers to improve communication. Effective Communication at all levels is an essential prerequisite for management. The emplyoees may not be aware of the hidden qualities and undisclosed part of the information; similarly, managers may not be aware of their own shortcomings ; even certain facts are not known to managers for various hierarchial reasons. Such barriers in communication can lead to lack of information and hence can adversely affect decision making. I enclose a file for benefit for all. Thanx.

Hi Archana,
you will enjoy this link playing with your friends on your personality and how your circle of associates see you...
Interactive Johari Window - take the test online
As already explained the concept, this game shows you how many people know you and how much you know about others to what extent etc. It is really interesting.
Thanks

Hello all,
very nice n useful infromation.
but I have one question, how do u measure these 4 qudrants for a person. Means how do you measure how much a person is in open area with respect to traits.
IS there any structured questionnaire for the same; or individual team will devise their own.

Hi
There is no measurement for the same. It is for one to understand that as we enter in to any new group(in companies or in life) for a team work ,the open area is smallest for all team members. It will help people to understand this concept of Johari window and try to maximise the open quadrant as soon and as much as possible for effective team work.
As the team grows older in time and starts sharing information the comfort level of all team members increases and the stranger(Unknown) quadrant reduces...again, this depends on the team members how far they are successful in seeking information, giving feedback and sharing about self...
It is a concept which every one can use in relationships for better understanding and effort is to increase the open area for every individual. So the open area will be different for different people because some people are introverts, shy and some are very outspoken, open etc...
So why it should be measured or what is the use of measuring ?
Thanks
Geeta
