Hi,
I am working in a private college. When I joined they said that If I work on sundays, I will be getting compensatory offs on week days. So by following the instructions of head of the college, I worked on sundays. But after working for 10 to 11 holidays, a circular came from head office stating that no compensatory offs should be granted to the employees. After that the head of my college stopped granting compensatory offs to all the employees. This frustrated me a lot because I didn't recognized for what i worked. So can u give me a solution for this? Or can you guide me how to go about it?

dear shanthi,

In which college are you working and what capacity ? If you provide, more details can be given.

However, i give few details which will be of some help to you.

1. Normally the compensation is granted only to non-academic staff like

OA, typist, stenographers, pa, superiendent.

2. No companesation will be granted to Academic starting from

Lecturer.....and also non-academic who are in the capacity of officers.

3. Above rules are prescribed in the colleges in Tamil Nadu. When I

worked in a University in Tamil Nadu, this benefit was refused to

me.

4. Since you are wokring in the private college, often there will be

necessity to attend the college on holidays also for which you may

not be able to claim any compensation.

5. If you are in the initial stages of your employment, bear it, since you

have long way to go in your life. Dont worry , you will be recognised

for your devotion, support to students etc.

6. Dont bother, if there is a real need to go to college, go and discharge

your duties without any compensation. You need more experience.

7. Have you cleared NET exam ?

By the by , i also belong to Vellore.

Dear Senthil Raj,
I am asking this question out of curiosity. Is weekly off not mandatory in educational institutions. Refusing to provide comp. off - would this not amount to O.T. Are educational institutions covered under Shops & Establishments Act.

Dear Mutyalu,
1. The educational institutions are not covered under Shops and Establishment Act.
2. Yes, the weekly off is mandatory. However, as i said in my earlier reply, the people in Class-1 officers capacity are required to come on holidays if work demands.'
3. Being the government organisations, the officers are on job for 24 hours.
4. Because of change in the education scnerio in our country, there is lot of work pressure on staff. Hence, they are bound to come on holidays in order to complete their assignments.
5. Though you can say 'no' for working on holidays, your reply may not be taken in a right spirit.
thanks for your reply.

Dear Mr. Senthil raj,
Thank you very much for your prompt reply. As you said, nowadays private institutions are taking their own advantage and pressuring the employees. But unless and until the chief or head of the organisation realises the mistake, we cannot find a solution.
Thank you.

dear shanthi,
thanks for your reply and realising the important factor.
Yes, as you said, the cheif has to realise and lay a good working platform.
I can quote my example.
Two years before i was called for to work in a newly established university in tamil nadu and believe with my team, i worked from 9.00 am to 11.00 pm for one year. During this time, i did work and also established a good system which is student-friendly. Therefore, after that very hard-working one year, in my division , we people started to leave for home at 6.00 pm. But this made other division people jealous, because they did the work only...but failed to establish a good sytem. But our chief never bothered about these areas and always gave pressure for late-sitting.
Whenever there is a need for late-sitting, do it atleast you can get good experience and you try to change the system slowly.
But ensure that you go to your home safely, after late-sitting.
