Dear Sudhakar, Your idea for imparting education to the children of this unorganised sector is really appreciable. For this purpose you may contact the o/o Deputy Commissioner of your area/ District Child Welfare Officer to further inquire regarding the facilities available to these children form the Govt. sector by theirself & through the NGO's. You may also contact the office of Labour Commissioner who is the enforcing authority under the Building & Other Construction Workers Act,1996 in regard to the schemes which are run by them through the State BOCW Board constituted for the welfare of these construction workers & their families. Hi Mr. Khola,
I am Working in a Construction Company. About 19000+ workers are working at our constuction site. We have provided family accommodation for the labours who have family and Children. We set up one experimental school at our Labour Colony for children of employed labourers.
Please help/guide me in
=> Finding partners to successfully implement the program
=> Advocacy with the Government for institutionalization and with other builders to scale the program at their sites
=> Curriculum and Pedagogy is to be designed to suit the profile and needs of these children.

Dear Gaurav,

If your construction company is covered under the BOCW Act & the Rules made there under then you must have noticed that there are two major welfare facilities are there which are provided by the Act & Rules e.g. Canteen (sec 37), Accommodation & other related facilities(sec 33&34). It is good that that your providing this facility to your workers along with facility of imparting educational to the children’s of the employed workers. In my opinion you can send the children to nearby Govt. primary school for proper institutional education. In my opinion Sharav Shiksa Abhiyan is also going on through out India & therefore if any of the children is not got admitted in Govt. school then you may approach the Authorities of this programme. They may give this facility at your sites. You can give transport facility to these children if required. State BOCW Boards are also running a number of welfare schemes & therefore get the workers registered as beneficiaries to avail the benefit of the schemes. As already told to find out the ways & means to do something better for the working class you may contact the District Administration, Labour Department, Distt. Child Welfare Officer, Officer of the Sharav Shiksa Abhiyan/ Education department etc. The Labour Department may be approach to function as a Nodal Department for calling a meeting of the employers of construction sites for persuading to grant non statutory facilities as well as for compliance of statutory facilities.
Submitted requested.

Thank You Mr. Khola for your valuable inputs.

Our company is coved under the BOCW Act, We have 5 canteens, 5 departmental stores on our various site and We have a labour colony with the capicity of 30,000 labour's accomodation with all basic needs. We have also provided family accomodations. Along with them 250+ children with the age group of 5 to 15 are staying at our labour colony.

But majority of these children do not go to school given the migratory nature of their families and the lack of suitable access to proximate quality schools. As a result, not only are they deprived of education in any form but are also, in a way, forced to seek other kinds of engagement that may not be constructive to their development.

There are several issues involved in the education of such children ranging from their possible multilingual composition to a varied profile in terms of exposure to any kind of schooling, the temporariness of their habitation etc.

Please suggest me if there is any Curriculum and Pedagogy is designed to suit the profile and needs of these children.

Thanks & Regards,

Dear Gaurav
Have you ever contacted any nearby school to give them the basic education to the children? If not approach the nearby school and discuss with the school authorities for giving the children of your company workmen.
Please conduct some CSR Activities through your company by which your company name will become familiar in the minds of local public. From your side you can sponsor one or two teachers for that school as the wards of your workmen are studying.
If you approach the school authorities in proper way surely they will give you some solution and necessary help to you.
All the best

Hello Mr. Bhaskar,
I have contacted nearby schools. But they denied taking students in between of their academic year. And some children who never went to schools, it's difficult for them to teach with K.G. Students. Despite recognition of the presence of such children and some provision to address their educational needs through tent schools etc., Governmental efforts have been minimal in this space, raising the significance of their education.
We have hired a school teacher. Who spare 2 - 3 hours with these children. So I 'm looking for some specially designed syllabus, Curriculum for childrens.

Dear Friend
Please do not go for some exam based education with syllabus, curriculum and other activities.
Initially give them sufficient training on English, Hindi and the regional language script with numerics.
Then teach them with words formation, sentence formation in all 3 language or at least in english and hindi, and like that whatever required for their day to day life and addition, multiplication, substraction, division and some basic behavioural culture.
Whoever showing good interest in education and trying to learn make them to appear their 10th board exam through open school system and further with that certificate they can proceed further. Whoever average in doing their learnings get them into some vocational course type like tailoring, carpentry course, masonry course, bar bending and reinforcement course, for which L&T is running an institute named CSTI, where they can get training.

It is not only for L&T, anyone in that area whoever interested can go and take admission in that CSTI, Ahmedabad, Painter, Electrician, Meson, Carpenter, Barbender/Reinforcement Fitter etc are available courses for those living in that vicinity.
