hi Srinivasan
i guess ul hav to place more emphasis on employee satisfaction...as they are the link between the company n the customers
the employees give impression of the brand
im doin a project on employee relations ...m including plant factoy n hospitality sector....uptill now.....dint find much differences
hotels had a more advanced employee appraisal system....n more activities regarding employee satisfaction n other team building activities are regularly conducted.
since employees are educated as compared to plant factory..they need behavioural training rather thn technical.....n they know their rights....but as far as i know...they dnt have unions...
regards
PS : lemme know if i missed somethin

I agree with Sunayna,

As for the unions, some of them do have... but not distructive in nature..

Other factors that HR managers in hospitality industry needs to see is that
  • 1. Recruitment : Very few hotel management institutes, and the best are managed by hotels themselves so, getting the best talent is problem

    2. Lot of Cruise companies comming up with high salary packages, tough to keep the turnover low

    3. Fringe Benefits : the major part of the compensation was fringe benefits, i.e. food, private transportation, mobile phone... that needs to be reworked considering the FBT

    4. Traning : most of the junior staff (waiters / house keeping boys ) do not have the required training and proper training for attitude needs to be imparted to the new recruit

The most important: Your question of whether or not to take the Assignment?

Because it is a service industry it does make the task more important because service industry depends very heavily on human resource

In my suggestion you should take up the job (if other factors are comfortable with you)

HOTEL INDUSTRY
HOTEL industry is a labor intensive industry. Hence the scope
for HR is wide.
The HR activities include
-recruitment/ selection [ lower staff turnover high/ causals content high]
-training is intensive [ induction / technical aspects]
-management development [ opportunity]
-teambuilding [ opportunity]
-appraisals regular
-industrial relations
-safety / health
etc.
If you are concerned about the prospects, one must
look at the structure / process of hotel management
-ceo
-GM [ OPERATION ]
-BANQUET MANAGER
-FOOD/ BEVERAGE MANAGER
-CHIEF CHEF
-FRONT OFFICE MANAGER
-SALES / MARKETING MANAGER
-HR MANAGER
YOUR PROGRESS to operation manager [ GM]
would be difficult, because of the lack of exposure/knowledge
of the technical aspects --FOOD/BANQUETING/ KITCHEN MANAGEMENT
ETC.
This is where the profit/ loss is made and hence the preference
for technical oriented people.
FOR A BEGINNER/ FRESHER, IT IS A LIVELY PLACE TO LEARN.

Hi
Have worked in the hotel industry for quite some time and feel that you should have a thorough understanding how the industry functions, specially being a both a capital and labour intensive one. The thrust will be on getting the whole manpower work towards a common goal, customer satisfaction. The work force consists of diverse background and infact represents a mini world in itself. Understanding the operations will help you to gel better.
You shall have a lot many things to learn.
If you need specific insight you could always write to me.
Good luck
