hi dear friend
please do remember that to learn english the only way you have now is to speak. you may not be able to do it direectly in presentations, but you need to regularise it by speaking in english to people arround you. they may laugh at you but trust me . out of 10 people laughing 1 person would certainly try to help you. this is more than enough to improve.
i am telling this from my own practical experiance. the only thing i tell you is that never loose courage. you ll certainly acheive your goal.

Hello Sekhar,
If you are from Hyderabad, suggest go to ramakrishna Math and enroll in their English Courses...I can vouch they are very good for people like you. And especially they insist on students being from non-English medium background.
There are different levels and you could chose depending on your comfort level.
Another reason--intangible-- why such courses help is you end up meeting others who would be worse than you....acts as a confidence booster while you are in the process of learning.
Pl. note that this is IN ADDITION to what others here suggested...trying to speak in english to the extent you can-with all the mistakes [I remember a quote here: "A mistake is a mistake, until you learn from it. Then it becomes an experience"]; reading English newspapers/books loudly to begin with [pl. don't overdo this-I know of people who even after getting good in english still can't understand unless they read loudly even in offices....force of habit so to say];watch english TV programs--news, etc.

Dear Sekar,

You should find where your problem started from. Ofcourse, you had identified that you are having complex.

Please note no one is perfect speaking english in india. so, don't worry about it.

First of all, you start speak with available words in english for conversation and over a period of time and you will definitely find improvement in your style of english and usage of words. Read some english news paper which are very ordinarliy understood by every one (simple english). I used initially indian express then change to The Hindu slowly once I felt understood. Never mind to converse with anyone, only thing is how the people understand your communication. Do not underestimate your speaking skills.

Also make others to speak english with you than your own language, otherwise Your learning from them won't be possible. This is how to learn from the opposite person which you interact.

Do not get into thinking about what you had spoken while speaking (like whether I used propositions correctly, degrees correctly, sentence conveyed are correct or not etc.) what ever you had spoken are out and will not come back unless opposite person react to it. He will take care of it.

I am sure your kind of people are perfect translator because during the thought process, you always feel to form sentence of speech in your own language and then try to convert to english before delivery.

Please try to see that what ever you feel should be english and through the words/sentence as it is. Later on you will find art of language skill improving.

You can even see few people use some fillers during conversation that " you know, emm, yes", in order to keep the continuty of the speech ON.

Hence don't worry about what you don't know. keep speaking what you know....

Ironically, I have been improving my english style last 10 years for MNC companies, but I end up with Japanese MNC where in I used to speak with telegraphial speaking to them, which is absolutely comfortable for my Japanese superiors.

with kind regards,

RAGHU

Dear All,
Please advice if there is a site where one can post one's query pertaining to English Grammar. This will solve problems of lot of people like Sekhar who either cannot converse freely in English or make lot of grammatical mistakes but are shy of asking others.

Hi
Please forget about this word 'FEAR' becoz this is the only thing which is dancing in your head and restricting your hidden talent. people are not born with the habit of speaking english, they hear from others n learn to speak.
The best solution is watch cricket matches/ english movies/ cartoons/ news (whichever u feel ) etc. DON'T WATCH ONLY BUT LISTEN TO THE COMMENTATORY/ WORDS AND TRY TO SPEAK OR PRONOUNCE THE SAME WAY AS THEY ARE DOING. INITIALLY YOU MAY FEEL ASHAMED OF PRONOUNCING WRONG WORDS OR YOU MAY FEEL WHAT MY NEIGHBORS, FRIENDS WOULD FEEL SO TO SOLVE THIS PROBLEM LOUDER YOUR TV SOUND SO THAT NO ONE CAN HEAR YOU AND YOU CAN LISTEN PROPERLY AND PRACTICE.
try it for few days u can notice the change, but NEVER LOOSE HOPE & ALWAYS HV CONFIDENCE.

Hi Sekar,

You have received great suggestions from our members.

But there is something that I need to let u know - ur very attitude to come out and ask for help states that u r set to improve. Learning the language is very simple - and not a life threatening one.

How I learnt...

My parents knew very little of the English language b4 they were blessed (:-D) with two daughters. They had no idea on how they would be able to encourage us and they did not want us to feel sad abt not knowing the language. They encouraged us to talk only in English at home (rite from childhood - right from my LKG and UKG). They read our books and taught us..
They were fluent with the language in a couple of years - not becos they wanted to, but they were eager to teach me n my sister.
They are proud now! All of us speak confidently at home and also to outsiders....
I am amazed by the way my Mother and Father speaks to ppl - just excellent!
They were their own teachers.

The same with teaching us Hindi.
We are south Indians. My mother first started learning it thru our books - taught us after learning it. we scored great marks!
She is good with the language now. I am not fluent tho - becos I did not feel the need to do so. But English - I had to learn (unknowingly) becos everyone communiated in English.

I hope u understood the message I wanted to convey. its the mindset and the need. If my parents could do it just becos they wanted me and my sis to be perfect in the language... u can do it if u want to.
Add positive hope, u will succeed.

Dear,
A language is only the medium to convey your message, You need not to worry for that. I thing it would not be like that all your staff members cant understand hindi or other local language that you are comfortable in. You can use the language you know for your presentations. But you should be confident in that....... Prepare yourself well.... and keep working on your english efficiency simultaniously.... Hope you will ovecome this difficulty very soon......

All the above replies are very valuable. Just a small tip to add on to the above "Think and speak the same language"
Many times we think in our Mothere tongue and convert those thoughts to English. That is a mistake
