I am not in HR. But I am victim of layoff. I am in IT(technical). I have 4 years experience. I have lost my job last month because company is small company and projects are cancelled. Now my question may look very different but I have to ask it.
Shall I mentioned in my resume that I have lost my job (worked from date to date) or shall I say I am still working in the company ( because the company who laid me off does not have problem if I mention that ). Because if I mention I have lost the job, it will be seen as very negative and I will not get short listed even. And if I say I am still working, the HR consultants may come to know, I have that fear too. I am very depressed, don't know what to do.
I have asked many of my friends. Lot of friends advice me to say I am still working. But I am very scared to do that. Few friends told me to write truth that I have been laid off because this is common now and it is not my fault that I have been laid off. But my worry is if I write truth that I have been laid off ( which my conscience tells me to do ), I will be seen with negative angle and my resume may not even get shortlisted. In such a tough market if there are few opportunities, I will loose them too. Second is I will have to compromise on salary, role etc. And if I hide that I am laid off, I will be caught some how because I am not good at hiding such things. I asked this question in here because HR people are best to guide me.
Please advice me.

It hardly matters whether or not you mention the dates of your current project in your resume. You being a technical professional will anyway be getting calls from recruiters if you have skills that are in demand.
Also a good recruiter will anyways check all the relevant information before submitting your profile for any open requirements. Our Recruiters talk with the candidate in detail enquiring on everything which is a client compliance i.e. Employment check, Education check, Criminal check etc.
Be honest with the recruiter about all facts as world is too small my friend.
I would appreciate you sending me your profile and I will see if my team can find an assignment that is commensurate with your skill-sets.

Hi Rahul & Malikjs, thank you very much for guidance. I have decided to be honest because it is not my fault that company could not hold on projects. I have done my work very sincerely but if company does not have project, I can not do anything for that. Thanks a lot for advice.

In my opinion, you should write the facts in your resume. You may be worried about not getting enough interview calls, but even more serious issue would be getting shortlisted and losing your chance to join the company due to one lie in your resume. Most of the consultants look for the required experience. It is also advisable to keep a covering letter along-with your resume to explain why you lost your job. Incase you have a convincing reason, you will get more calls than what you could get with a lie that you are still working.
If anyone from the HR department of the company checks your resume (plus covering letter), you have cleared the first hurdle for sure/. Try to be as genuine as possible and keep brushing up your skills. This would help you get the job you desire for.
