murali,

In many countries, companies use varieties of ways / formulas to determine the

training hours. Unfortunately there is no consistency or reliability in the

inputs used.

FIRST OF ALL, THE TRAINING ITSELF IS BASED ON THE

NEEDS, WHICH COULD BE OBJECTIVE OR SUBJECTIVE.

THE NEEDS COULD BE BASED ON

-performance appraisal/ gaps identification

-need based on introduction new technology

-new product introduction

-new systems

-new processes

-new market entry

-new market segment entry

-new application of established products

-new orientation programs

-as part of career development

-as part of succession planning

-as part of promotion

-as part of new skill development

-as part of multiskilling

-as part of job rotation

-as part of job enrichment

-to counter competition

-to counter environment change

etc etc.

TO DETERMINE THE TRAINING HOURS, ONE SHOULD

ALSO KNOW THE BACKGROUND OF INDIVIDUALS/GROUP

-learning levels

-learning differences

-learning skill levels

-current knowledge level

-current skill levels

-current attitude levels

-desire to learn / develop

-dollar budget allocation

-time allowed to be away from job.

etc etc

ALL THESE FACTORS AFFECT THE HOURS OF TRAINING FOR

A PROGRAM.

================================================

A NUMBER OF COMPANIES, WITH WHOM I WAS ASSOCIATED,

EMPLOYED A SIMPLE APPROACH ---BASED ON THE TOTAL WORKING HOURS

IN A YEAR.

I WILL SHOW YOU THE PROCESS -- USING AN EXAMPLE.

================================================== ===

SALES TRAINING [ EXAMPLE]

The number of days in a year = 365

If you take away the following

-4 annual leave = 20 days

-public holidays =11 days

-sales meetings/conferences =10 days

-sat/sundays = 52x2 = 104 days

total number of NON-working days = 20+11+10+104=145 days

SO THE TOTAL WORKING DAYS = 365-145 =220 WORKING DAYS.

WHICH IS EQUAL TO = 1760 HRS.

================================================== ====

THE SALES BUDGET/TARGETS are based on 220 working days.

So if you take people off the road, it has big impact on sales turnover.

HENCE THE COMPANIES ALLOW THE FOLLOWING

FOR TRAINING

MINIMUM = 4 DAYS = 32 HRS = 2% of TOTAL WORKING HOURS.

MEDIAN = 6 DAYS =48 HRS = 3 % of TOTAL WORKING HOURS.

MAXIMUM = 8 DAYS = 64 HRS = 4% OF TOTAL WORKING HOURS.

================================================== =====

THE SAME LOGIC IS APPLIED TO OTHER TRAINING PROGRAMS

OF VARIOUS OTHER GROUPS LIKE SUPERVISORS/ MANAGERS ETC.

Become a Training Manager - its simple

Step1
Earn a bachelor's degree in business or a related field, including human resources or education. Be sure you include a variety of classes in computer programming, as this is vital if you want to become a training manager.
Step2
Include career-related electives in college such as classes in psychology, social science, management and business organization. These classes will allow you to better understand the company you work for. This will allow for better decision making in terms of what training to provide employees and the delivery method once you have the job.
Step3
Acquire a teaching degree or certificate in your state. An education in teaching will prepare you for speaking in front of a group as well as organizing and planning classes or seminars. Though this degree is not necessarily required to become a training manager, it can make you stand out to a potential employer.
Step4
Start your career working in human resources as an assistant. This will help you acclimate to the company's goals and mission statement, making it easier to determine what skills employees need to better serve the company.
Step5
Obtain your first entry-level position with a small-to-mid-sized company. Many smaller companies will hire graduates straight out of college with degrees in human resources, business administration or the liberal arts. Focus on learning as much as you can about communicating with coworkers and supporting management.
Step6
Teach a course on something you enjoy, using your friends and family as an audience. This is a great way to practice your teaching skills while asking for feedback in a non-work environment. Teaching classes, like all public speaking, becomes easier and more enjoyable with practice.
Step7
Rent a room or hall for an evening and teach a class or seminar to college students. While obtaining the necessary experience at work, teach classes or seminars during the weekend to broaden your teaching ability. Have the audience fill out surveys and suggestions. This is a great addition to the training manager's resume.
Case study === an organization was operating under differing production schedules. The hr manager found it difficult to conduct training sessions for all the employees at the same time. He suggested the implementation o computer based training (cbt)which can be effective for the employees working under differing production schedules.
Q1) what steps should hr manager take to make e-learning effective?
