it depends on the nature of industry u are trying to execute, as per my experience i feel for a serivce/hospitality industy the method is 360 degree, and to others it could be balance score card any other costomized method of traditional and modern systems (like mbo/ranking/incidental) etc, it purely depends on the nature of industry and type of the job u r trying to apply.

In my opinion the best method is the 360 degree method with some modifications to suit your organizational requirements..
This may be applicable to almost all the posts and the industry types... But using the stock method would not give you the kind of result that a modified / adopted method specially customised for your requirements and matching your business processes can give.
So the basic Idea would be to pick-up 360 degree performance appraisal system and then work out modifications that suits your business processes.
