It is a year on year exercise for companies to give out gifts during the Christmas season. As we have a recession that has set in this year, do you think its ok to skip it altogether? Would like your thoughts on this..

The practice of giving Christmas Gifts to employee is good. It is a kind of sharing happiness of the employer with employees. If the employees are aware of this fact, then there is no problem in not giving gifts this time due to reasons beyond the control of an independent employer like yours. But would you think that employees think like this? I have come across with employees who seldom bother employer's side. They are concerned only about what they should get. Since then I have the practice of not offering anything which is not provided in the labour Acts as mandatory. If any employer, due to affection or otherwise, give any gift to employees the same will become a right for them. Remember "privileges become right" Regards, Madhu.T.K

Gifts means a lot to anybody as it is the only way to show your love and respect towards your employees. So cutting down with gifts because of recession will show that you only mean business and nothing else. This obviously would be a bad sign as your employees would lose confidence on u. So try to keep them happy and help yourself with their co-operation.

I guess the practice these days is that, employers will take a thousand steps forward for that one step for the employee. At the end of it, this is what the market has created. During boom times, when the salaries are sky rocketing, the employee is king.. but come recession.. it is the employer who has the last laugh. Am still for rewards for employees, but appreciating some while instilling envy into others will create an imbalance and division among your workforce.

I cast my vote on what Sunil said, that envy could actually imbalance and divide the workforce. It is the employer who is responsible for any made in the company. So a gift will ignite confidence in all the employees to work better. Due to the on going economic crisis you can opt for gifts with discounted rate.

Gifting out something like an electronic gadget or an Ipod even during such difficult times is sure to be appreciated by employees and would go a long way.

What about department store gift vouchers? They are good because your subordinates get to choose their own preferred gifts. If you think the gift is a little too impersonal, then add a little Christmas card along with the gift voucher. Christmas is a good time to say a couple of nice words. Thank each subordinate for their hard work and let each individual know what his/her strengths and contributions to the company are.

I did consider that, but a thing like that would come across as, 'doing it for the sake of doing, practice'. I want to do something that will create a sort of a memory stamp that will remind them that they are fully appreciated and something as significant was received.

I totally agree with you Sunil. Many a time companies give out gifts which is done more to check it off their to do list for the year rather than meaningful gifting. I had an instance where I got a traveling bag from the company with a fancy design and the company logo. I just had to transport it from the office to home, when one if the wheels broke off!!! So gifting something with quality and purpose rather that saving a penny on quality will do a world of difference and avoid that backlash.
