Dear Friends, I am working in an MNC as HR. I am facing a strange problem. One of the Lady Executive (Team Lead) continues to stay till 11 to 11:30pm almost everyday, works of Saturday, Sunday and she is 6 months pregnant. Once her husband called me and complained that she is being harassed by the Company and made to work long hours knowing that she is pregnant and went to the extend of saying that he wants in writing that if anything happens to her, the Company is responsible for it. Further, i checked with her Manager and enquired, he said even thought the work is more, but not to the extent of 11pm almost everyday. Then i called the Lady Executive and checked the reasons for the late staying in the office. She replied, she is not interested to go to the house as she problems with her in-laws, other family members. Dear friends please advice what needs to be done. Regards, Chandrashekar

This is a strange case. I have seen men working late in the office just to avoid crowded and unpleasant lodge rooms where they stay. It may happen that to avoid in laws and bad treatment at home, married women may stay back at office till mid night. From the organisation' angle, you have nothing to do with their private life. However, if you have received a warning from the husband of the woman employee, you have to instruct her not to stay back at office till night. In this case, the employee is pregnant also. Therefore, it is better to give instruction accordingly. Regards, Madhu.T.K

Dear Chandrashekha, Obviously it is her personal matter. No one can help and interfere in her family affairs. But you can do one thing that call her husband at the office and discuss the same alongwith Lady Executive in calm atmosphere. Rgds

Hi, The problem is really strange. Though you can not interfere in anybody's personal life, but because you got a warning from her husband side ,so the better way to talk calmly to him only on the same. Please share with us when you sort out the same problem.Waiting eagerly for your reply. Regards shikha

Hi All, Lady Excutive should not be allowed to sit in office for so long hours. Her husband should be called to office and with spouse ,counselling should be done on priority basis. If something happens to her while working late hours in office, it will be treated as in the course or during the course of the employment. Company or organisation will be in trouble. Her husband should be communicated that , she is troubled by her In-Laws and solution should be provided to them. Regards, Nimish Joshi 9969526325

dear Chandrashekher as an HR personnel, firstly you should speak with her reporting person on her late stay in the office. tell her reporting person to not let her stay in this situation for long hours. if her reporting person is male, you should ideally take the help of another lady executive at same or higher level. advice her to resolve her personal issue with her husband.

Hi, I have been observing such issues every now and then. Let it be her private reasons. But there are certain policies / principles to be strictly followed by each and every organisation and their employees. In this case neither she has that pressure to stay long, nor her manager insists her to do so. Its upto the HR personnel to ensure that people do not simply stay in the office just avoid such issues. Imagine if a considerable number of employees follow this !!! It will have a huge cost implications on the organisation. -Saravana Rajan.

Dear Chandrashekhar See, if she has already told why she is staying late in office, even she is pregnant. Her Problem is genuine. Now in such situation any employee devote and depend upon another face. Any of us are just on two parts 1. Personal Life & 2. Working Life. on daily basis. Now the time is deal such preoblem and proof the actula "HR" stands. We are not in fashion of Personnel Management now, where we should not interested about employees personal life. HRM is to do that defiantly. You should not create the even single penny environment questionable for her in your office. Due to her personal life she is feeling comfortable at working place. By questioning, giving writing and meeting with Boss, etc… type of methods make her guilty in working life. She may be disturbed from working life also. If anybody will disturb from both the parts Working & Personal…what will be situation, most embarrassing at the movement of Pregnancy….!!!! So be careful. Create a healthy and happy environment in your office around her. Do all the practices like just to share the things with her colleagues? Talk to her husband separately and know his points regarding the Home life and relations. But it should not be in the knowledge of your lad employee that these practices are going ahead by you. Make such presentations and seminars in your office which having aim of such topics like.. “Relaxations increases outputs”, “Company cares employees” & “Art of Living”… etc…. You know you have to make not s single employees life but one more upcoming life of our nation’s future. I hope for a month or two it will certainly help and after that time she will take maternity leave. And as the rule of some ups and down of human life in this case after the delivery of Baby, may God will make healthy relations with her In-laws and her husband. A new life is more important for all the characters in this case. After a baby in house many of clashes get crashed in any house, it is generally found. So all the best. Regards, Gaurav Arora

Hi, Please have a look into these thoughts too. Most of the employees might not know why this female is staying for too long. they might think that the organization and the particular team lead does not care for others especially when a person is pregnant. This is not a good sign for your organization. Of course the lead might have known her personal issues and would have allowed her to do as per her wish. Even this is not correct, the lead must have brought this to your notice. Please educate your team leads too. When her husband has gone to a level of complaining to you as a harassment, please note that she would have been asked by their family members the reason for staying too long. More over it is your responsibility of taking care of your employees. Some people will not like discussing about their personal matters to a stranger. Hence, this is not an healthy situation neither to her nor to you Please ask her 1. Whether she needs a counselling or whetrh her husband and family memertbs neeeds a counselling. 2. Whether you speaking to her husband will be acceptable by him. By this time she should have judged her husband's character might well. 3. Running out from problems is not going to help her any way. She needs to face them. 4. Since this is her personal life, you can advice her to discuss with her parents and be with them till her delivery where she feels the comfort and her husband indirectly understands that she has a dislike to stay with his family members.
