I need to put a humor part in the Retention Part. A week years ago, one of our Sub-Staff[ Peon] was resigning from his current position. When he came to submit resignation letter and during the last phase, our HR Head got angry with his attitude, she replied-

Hey Buddies,Stay Interviews are sort of formal way of doing it, But I want to share the informal way of doing which i normally use to follow in my company, Every one can do it... 1).During lunch breaks...Instead of sitting with managers and having lunch...We can sit with our employees and have lunch and make them approachable to us.. once you do this employees tend to speak out their frustrations which they are unable to come at our desk and say. Also one can ask them about their vacation or about their family members so they can open up with us with all their concerns.Every day you can change your lunch table excuse your self and sit with them. 2) Smoking zones I feel here people become very freindly with HR i feel the best way to remove their frustration , I never use to smoke but I use to take cup of tea or coffee and sit with them and understand their concerns.These were two methods I use to follow to understand their concerns make list and discuss the same to Senior Management. There is problem with the formal way of doing it, every one do not open up and you end up lossing your employees.Also I use to keep spy's you may not agree with me with this but it did work for me... this person use to come and tell me who is frustrated and who is about to leave and the persons concern , what i use to do is i use to take down the concern discuss the same with the employee and retain .With these type of techniques you improve HR and employee relationship as well retain employee.Please give your views or your suggestions as to how you folks use to retain employees.Guys the above method does work.Regards,Arun F
Hi Arun, I agree and appreciate your informal way of retaining the employees. But how do you find that spy amongst all the employees..??
the post consist of really good strategies ,specially i will say from my experience too that the spy strategy really works well provided we have selected the correct person for this.
Choosing the right spy .......... it lies with the HR person's ability to study and analyse people.

Bhavna, Seleceting the right spy is upon the HR you need to get the person in to confidence .. I use to take feedback not only from employees as well as Drivers,Office boys even security guards (:
pls sugget any managerial HR opening . Due to the USA recessation My company is hit hard and closing its operation. Regards Binay

THANKS FOR YOUR VIEW I DO AGREE WITH YOUR POINT AND IAM FOLLOWING THE SAME BUT IN DIFFERENT CONTEXT AND SITUATION.
But one thing that you said that you keep spy if that secret is found then your other employee would think that he used to collect information with the spy and no one will have a good relation with him which inturn make the other ( spy ) person to feel bad about him if the same is found .
Hope you understand what iam coming to say , and if iam wrong in my view please correct me.

Srirangan,You are very correct on your view , but the beauty lies in the HR who gets the information from them,Without making other employees know that one of their colleague is giving me the information.When I am talking about Information ( I am talking about Concerns and not Gossips ).When I am talking about Spy's I am not talking about one person it can be any one from office boys to staff , Even this information you will not get unless and until your employees trust you very well....Trust is one important factor in todays HR Depts, We HR we give false promises to the Employees during the joining of an employee. From here the Employee makes perceptions about HR and they never open up.... Onces a liar is always an liar it takes time for others to trust him or her.I always hear from Employees outside in the resturants cursing HR depts this happens just to meet our targets our Recruiters give false promises to Employees its the duty of the Line HR to make it correct everything before rolling out the offer letter.Once we get an employee giving false promises the employee starts posioning the minds of other employees.. as it goes one rotten apple spoils them all...These were some of my views on how HR depts function now a days...Regards,Arun F
