HI Minarsh,
Head hunting is definitely part of recruitment...targeting the right person at right time by different means...like thru portals, paper ad, campus placements, or outsourcing to consultants..etc.
These are usual processes to recruit people, but there are innovative techniques to get the right person, poaching the competent from rival companies, if you can get one contact number, trying the references and reach the person, infact there are many ways, which look funny yet people practice to get the competent one...like they stand outside the gate where there is a walk in, and poach people or attend the interview like any candidate, and attract them to your company or age old techinque of poaching like calling the direct line, i have even seen people targeting public in the weekends at busy shopping malls...all this is part of head hunting... hope you got an idea.. :)

Hi

What the books say "The custom of cutting off and preserving the heads of enemies as trophies."

Slang.

The process of attempting to remove influence and power from enemies, especially political enemies.

Informal.

The business of recruiting personnel, especially executive personnel, as for a corporation.

The act or an instance of such recruiting.

Headhunting one referred to identifying certain persons or categories of people , with certain skills and competencies and getting after them to join the organisation , (this task is done by recrutiment consultants ).But today such consultants are referred to as Retained Search Consultants.

Headhunters tend to either be generalists or specialists in a particular niche, with some recruiting firms also specialising in a geographical region as small as a city, and others recruiting worldwide. Niche headhunters may specialise in a specific industry or type of employee, such as medical specialists, information-technology professionals, senior-level executives, or sales professionals.

Hi,
Just to summerise all about Headhunting....
Head Huntuing in today's scenario means to recruit an individual with a particular skill set who is not looking for a job. It differs from the regular sourcing from jobsites and or by references. Head hunting is typically done as follows:
1. As per the JD, suitable companies are identified by the recruiter.
2. The recruiter identifies specific Departments which are likely to have the candidates matching the JD in these companies.
3. The recruiter uses his skills and gets the details of people like names designation etc of the target department.
4. The recruiter then speaks to the seemingly relevant persons who may likely show their interest in the position.
5. On the consent of the person, the recruitment process starts as usual.

Contarary to the popular belief that Head hunting is only done for only senior people, it can be done for any level. It all depends upon how niche is the skill set.
Usually this task of headhunting is assigned to skilled recruiters as Companies may not like to get involved directly into this activity and face embrassment in case if anything backfires. Hence professional recruitment agencies are assigned the task.

Guys kindly add on if I have missed anything.........
