“Shewag has scored triple century”.

The reaction of the three MBA qualified colleagues to this statement baffled me. One instantly understood that it is cricket, but was doubtful whether it is one-day or test match. The other had heard vaguely about Shewag and the third chose to vacate the arena. As I dwelt more on my baffled reaction, there were strong points of view that interest in cricket need not be the yardstick of merit. I tended to agree with a rider.

Two faction leaders from a political party individually or together go to their high command for solution. Two general managers say, marketing and HR also go to the Chairman for a similar reason. Even two teachers go to the Principal with issues. In all these cases what is expected and reflected is the ‘Conflict Resolution Skills’ of the leadership.


The faction leaders may return satisfied or otherwise but the conflict with which they initiated the trip would have melted away.

Leaders have the benefit of opinion givers, but they succeed because they also take opinion from those who choose to remain silent out of their shyness, inhibition or just fear. While how they take opinion from such silent loving people has largely remained a secret, they do take opinion from them. That in essense is 'Leadership'.
