Dear Training Managers & Training heads,

The Changing Role of the Training Manager

Training managers are subject to several challenges which need to be met often within the parameters of reduced training budgets.
The technical challenge is to keep up-to-date with changes in legislation, company policy, new methods of training delivery and new subject matter (especially in Information Technology)
The strategic challenge is to monitor and respond to expected changes in skill requirements, and to deliver training which provides demonstrable, measurable bottom line results, both short and the long term.
The professional challenge is to keep up-to-date with changing practice, to manage ongoing continuing professional development, and to ensure that the organization’s trainers and line managers are informed and practised in applying the best in training ideas and methods. Four roles for training managers in modern organizations:

1. learning specialist and instructor
2. administrator of training and development staff and programmes
3. information coordinator
4. internal consultant to the management of the organization.

Traditionally, the activities of training managers have focused primarily on the first two of these roles. As the need to contract out training projects and to equip managers with staff development skills has increased, so the focus has shifted significantly towards the last two of the roles listed:

• the training manager as information coordinator:
o managing and monitoring contractor relationships
o enabling and evaluating line manager effectiveness in developing their staff
o coordinating an organization-wide skills development effort.
• the training manager as internal consultant:
o identifying skill development needs for the future
o advising on staff development methods and best practice
o evaluating and improving the bottom line effectiveness of the organization’s training and development effort

This is the new profile which training managers will need to match as they help to steer their organizations into the new millennium.

I am amazed by the way you are putting up some sections ..Good! You may not believe about a year ago or so I was suggesting that a company associates with a senior Training Consultant to identify needs, gaps and really work as an internal Consultant.... when exercised with maturity and handled without bias true growth will emerge for Individuals & Companies!

Become a Training Manager

Step1
Earn a bachelor's degree in business or a related field, including human resources or education. Be sure you include a variety of classes in computer programming, as this is vital if you want to become a training manager.
Step2
Include career-related electives in college such as classes in psychology, social science, management and business organization. These classes will allow you to better understand the company you work for. This will allow for better decision making in terms of what training to provide employees and the delivery method once you have the job.
Step3
Acquire a teaching degree or certificate in your state. An education in teaching will prepare you for speaking in front of a group as well as organizing and planning classes or seminars. Though this degree is not necessarily required to become a training manager, it can make you stand out to a potential employer.
Step4
Start your career working in human resources as an assistant. This will help you acclimate to the company's goals and mission statement, making it easier to determine what skills employees need to better serve the company.
Step5
Obtain your first entry-level position with a small-to-mid-sized company. Many smaller companies will hire graduates straight out of college with degrees in human resources, business administration or the liberal arts. Focus on learning as much as you can about communicating with coworkers and supporting management.
Step6
Teach a course on something you enjoy, using your friends and family as an audience. This is a great way to practice your teaching skills while asking for feedback in a non-work environment. Teaching classes, like all public speaking, becomes easier and more enjoyable with practice.
Step7
Rent a room or hall for an evening and teach a class or seminar to college students. While obtaining the necessary experience at work, teach classes or seminars during the weekend to broaden your teaching ability. Have the audience fill out surveys and suggestions. This is a great addition to the training manager's resume.

Now I need a clarification. Is this Training Heads meet different from CiteHR one? If so then could you share the possible dates for the Training Heads meet.
