To succeed in HR, you must give presentations on your HR ideas to key decision makers in your organization. To key to getting buy-in to the ideas you are presenting is that they should contain no shocking revelations for the audience. And there's only one way to insure this. And you should inscribe this in your heart....pre-wire everything! Pre-wiring means taking your audience through your ideas before you gather them together for your dog and pony show. Often resistance to your ideas occur not because they aren't good. But because your audience was surprised. In business, key decision makers don't like surprises -- especially ones that force them to change their plans. So, before you do your formal pitch, send out a summary of your recommendations for feedback and comment from key decision makers first. It will keep you from getting blindsided by major objections when you finally present your ideas. It will also help you build a consensus in favor of your ideas among those who have to approve or implement them. It will also give you a chance to modify your ideas to fit the political realities of your organization. All of this will greatly improve the chances that your presentation is a success and your ideas bought and sold.
I learned all this the hard way. Hopefully, no one will have to repeat this mistake.
