Hi,
People generally have a view on all that is political or anything based on principal but generally these are the points where people get offended too.
The best line to start would be on a social issue like child marriage or sati or widow remarriages or something on those lines these discussions generally bring out positive responses from people.
Once the person starts talking its easy to judge what he/she is interested in and take it on from there.
Generally the second step could be any sport most of the people come around with cricket, soccer, golf or tennis.
The third stage should be politics or finance and if not interested then go in for any topic which should help the other person form an opinion once the person starts forming an opinion its easier to discuss and talk to the person.
Hope the above suffices.
Anything new please add.
Thanks & Regards,
AJ

I think the best way to start the conversation would be by taking up the latest sports or entertainment news as these are the topics most people are comfortable talking about. Most important thing while making a person comfortable while talking to you is listening to him and giving him a positive response by smiling and/or nodding while listening.
This strategy has worked for me. Hope it is useful for you as well.

Hi
In case of new employees or unknown members first we start with our self introduction. Then we can discuss general topics like movies which hero/heroin they likes like that we can start our discussion.
Then about their family and kids initially the unknown persons may feel shy to openly talk. After general topic they may discuss whatever they would like share.

Hi........Tom&Jerry,
Ok. Your question is How to mingle with others at different stations..? Am i right?
Simple: On one fineday, invite them to watch your (Tom&Jerry) videos. The next day they will start talking to you. You can also mingle with them talking something about Tom&Jerry.

the best way is to discuss about the prevailing situation which very obviously everyone knows ... and must ask more open ended questions to avoid the pauses....
