Shop and Establishment Act Registration
Dear Gurus,

I am an HR Executive.Our company is in Chennai. We want to register under Shops and Establishment Act.

I have no clue how to register, what are the formalities, what forms are required, what registers has to be maintained....

Kindly guide how to proceed with this....

Dear Sanhil,

The following things has to be maintained for registering under shops act of 1957


Shops & Establishment Act.

  1. Approval from Department of Labour – not obtained for show room
  2. Below are the registers to be maintained under the Act
      • Form-P (Register of Fines, deductions and advances)
      • Form-Q (Register of Employment)
      • Form-R (Salary Register)
      • Form-T (salary Slip)
      • Form-VI (National & Festival Holidays Register)
      • Form-A (Register under Maternity Benefit Act)
      • Form-D (Register under Equal Remuneration Act)
      • Form-B (Register of Wages – Consolidated)
      • Form-C (Register of unpaid Fines, Salary and Deductions)
  1. Forms and Annual return to be submitted:
      • Form ‘S’ Notice of employees, their Working hours and weekly holiday etc
(Whenever required)
      • Form V – List of National & festival holidays for the coming year (Due:31st December)
      • Form III- Annual Return under minimum wages Act (Due:31st January)
      • Form A – Return under Tamil Nadu Labour welfare Fund Act along with payment
      • Form K – Annual Return under Maternity Benefit Act
  1. If the number of Staff/Worker exceeds 20:
    • Form 1 – Register of workmen to be maintained
    • Form 2 – Half Yearly return to be submitted for the half year ending 30th June & December within 30 day under Tamil Nadu Industrial Estt. (Conferment of permanent Status to workmen) Act to the Inspector of Labour having jurisdiction over the area.
